From the start, I told Amanda my main goal in finding a caregiver for my 3 month old was so I could pump and get some rest. For the first week, this was achieved. The second week, I had a bad night where I got 2 hours of sleep. She then told me twice that I should stop bfeeding and give her formula in order to be the mother that my baby needed. She started this conversation by saying “mothers feel intense pressure to bf.” I felt this was extremely insensitive and judgmental. I have 2 doulas that support me long-term and have received many suggestions/advice but never been told what to do in this manner before. Overall, it was difficult to figure out what Amanda wanted— more hours, less hours… she asked if we wanted to hire her friend to work hours that we had already scheduled. She was a good caregiver overall but it just was not the right fit for me.
