I had the pleasure of meeting Allie in the spring of 2013 when she applied, interviewed and was hired to join my team of summer Counselors. The role of Counselor is challenging. After a week of training, counselors are expected to follow an outlined schedule and curriculum, assist with keeping the camp organized, create a positive, fun and welcoming environment for campers and parents, resolve conflicts, directly lead 12 campers and assist other counselors with the management of all 77, 6 - 10 year old campers, communicate effectively with parents, maintain a high level of energy, anticipate problems before they happen, mentor and supervise counselors-in-training and work well within a team in potentially high stress situations. All while teaching a science and nature based curriculum! While this curriculum is developed in advance of counselor training, counselors assist with modification of the curriculum during the training week and consistently make adjustments throughout the summer to ensure age and group appropriateness. Over the summer, Allie's confidence and attention to her position grew and she approached her role with enthusiasm. She excelled at developing relationships with even the quietest of campers and added a theatrical flair to camp activities.
