I was a martial arts instructor for mentally challenged and physically disabled students at my local studio. I held this position for over a year, leading a class of 6+ students of varying ages and disabilities, including one privately instructed student. For 4-5 years, I volunteered at a local horseback riding program that teaches horseback riding and performs hippotherapy for the disabled. I have babysat for some families that I met through these positions. Some of the children I've taught and cared for have strong behavioral problems such as ODD and ADHD, others have had problems with communicating, relying on ASL/SEE to converse. I understand the importance of keeping special equipment sanitary, and I also understand the strict rules of food allergies. I am certified in CPR and have had First Aid training, and I know how to work an Epi Pen if needed. Because of my experiences in teaching martial arts, I am very comfortable in sitting for multiple persons at once, of any age or special need. I am not a nurse, nor do I have any training in nursing care. I am not a replacement for a home nurse, but I am more than happy to care for more basic needs and to entertain the child/charge while you are out. I do not get upset very easy, and keep an even keel through any small crisis from soiled clothes to hurt feelings. I have been known to have a special knack for the caring of special needs children. I am not daunted by medical equipment or extra rules, and I have an understanding of mental disabilities. I also have background in ASL and SEE and can babysit for families with members who are deaf, hard of hearing, or rely on signing to communicate on a daily basis. I am building fluency and avid learner and pick up new signs quickly. I am not afraid of a child's temper tantrums, and am very good in redirecting the behavior into something more constructive such as going outside, talking, or playing a game. And, though I love working with highly energetic children, I also enjoy spending quality time with shy persons who prefer quiet activities. I love helping to bring them out of their shell, and teach them to be a little more confident in themselves and others. I am not afraid to change diapers or soak up messes in the bathroom, and I also know to always expect the unexpected. I do ask for a list of any details on food/feedings, naps, house rules, and where any supplies I may need to utilize, particularly cleaning supplies.
