Those with special needs have captured my heart for years. As a young adolescent, I was first exposed to the struggles and skills of those with disabilities at a therapeutic riding stable, where I helped riders of all ages gain muscle, coordination, fine motor skills, and confidence. Babysitting for close friends with children with special needs, sometimes overnight, I relished the unique personalities of these kids. In high school, I worked as an aide for kids with a variety of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders, Aspergers, traumatic brain injury, Down syndrome, PTSD, developmental delays, and cerebral palsy. It was a privilege to learn how to diffuse occasional outbursts, adapt activities to match abilities, and advocate for their rights in the program. I'm currently in nursing school, and my passion for those with special needs has persisted. I am researching and presenting nursing interventions that will better serve the autistic population. In my career, I hope to serve those with special needs. Having completed my pediatric class/clinical, I am competent in caring for children with oxygenation, ostomies, enteric feeding, catheterization, and central lines.
