I began working with students with autism as a high school senior, tutoring them in English classes. I continued my work with special needs students by mentoring, tutoring, and being a companion/nanny for an elementary/middle school student with autism. From there, I worked with a student with autism and ADHD from the ages of four to seven, and I taught him social skills using Stanley Greenspan's floortime (play therapy). I received a Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education from National-Louis University, and I am also a certified learning behavior specialist for grades kindergarten through age 21. This certification qualifies me to teach students with various needs, including but not limited to learning disabilities and emotional disabilities. After receiving my degree, I taught a self-contained elementary classroom (kindergarten through fifth grade) with students with various special needs. Finally, I taught in a high school classroom for students with social-emotional (including autism) disorders, teaching them academic, social-emotional, and transitional skills. Currently, I tutor students within the general and special education curriculums. I believe that all students have a unique learning style, and progress is dependent on matching teaching styles to learning styles. I can differentiate lesson plans to meet the needs of different students.
