My niece was a Down syndrome child. She was such a joy to be around. She was severely handicapped due to brain swelling during heart surgery. She could not walk, talk, feed, or change herself. In some ways, she was more like a large infant. I had the privilege to help my sister care for her as on a regular basis. Some of the things I did were: feeding from a cup or feeding tube (which I learned how to set and assemble) changing and bathing, helping her in and out of her special chairs and wheelchair, and entertaining with books, songs, and general silliness to get her to smile. April went to be with the angels this year. I miss her terribly. I hope that I will again be able to touch the life of more Down syndrome children.
