I am currently assisting an elderly couple. The woman has advancing dementia and became very stagnant for quite some time. I have introduced a chart with stickers for accomplishments such as putting money and spoons in a jar, stacking cans, recognizing number cards, walking around property, and connecting Legos, etc. I have also encouraged personal grooming such as make up, fingernail polish, hand care, etc. Also, I have provided magazines for her to look through and become more acquainted with what she has missed while being so stagnant. I speak directly to her even though they said she does not respond. Thankfully she responds to me even though she has advancing dementia. She now occasionally gets up on her own and walks across the room to the family's surprise. She had not done that since last fall. I have helped many elderly people and have said she was my hardest but my most rewarding.
