My little brother was born with Down Syndrome and later on in life was also diagnosed with autism. I have acted as my brother's personal assistant for most of his life. I have personally experienced the demands and hardships of providing personal care for a handicapped individual, yet I also believe that getting to know these special people is an unique gift that not many take time to appreciate. My little brother did not walk until he was seven and was not potty- trained until he was about 14. He has a very strict diet and until he was about 10- years-old. He needed assistance when he ate. He is in a wheelchair most of the time and he has an service dog to assist him. I have also worked with many other individuals with Downs syndrome and autism as well as other disabilities such as Tourettes, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities such as dyslexia, ADD, and ADHD. I also have experience working at a daycare and I have worked as a tutor for a variety of different subjects and with different age groups. It was my love for my little brother and working with children which inspired me to get my degree in developmental psychology and to pursue a career in which I could help better the quality of life for these amazing people in any way possible.
