As a Certified Child Life Specialist I have had the opportunity to volunteer and work with children on the autism spectrum, cerebral palsy, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes and cystic fibrosis. My work with children with special medical needs include therapeutic interventions such as medical play and self-expressive activities, and developmental play to promote normalcy and foster development. I very much enjoy working with children with special needs from infancy to 21 years of age. But I also understand that my work is not only limited to the child with special needs but also the family. I am a firm believer in inclusion and promoting family interactions in all aspects of my work. Family-Centered care is key in helping a family cope with a child with special needs.
