I have a love and appreciation for young people who are challenged with disabilities. I have found working with them requires insight and skills, which I am continuously striving to develop. I find these relationships to be enjoyable and rewarding. I worked for the past year in a Minneapolis middle school DCD program as a Special Education Assistant. I supported two students in mainstream general education classes as well as assisted students in special education classrooms. The disabilities of our students included cerebral palsy, fetal alcohol sydrome, autism and general developmental cognitive disability. Mainly my work has involved assisting in education classes, teaching basic skills and emotional support. I also have a godson with schizophrenia, whom I have supported for the past 16 years and worked as his PCA for a period of one year. I continue to see him on a regular basis.

Gale works in my classroom with a variety of students with special needs. She readily meets each student/child "where he is at". The students in our program have a wide variety of skills. Gale easily adapts to each student's skills and needs. For example, she attends general education math and science classes with students who are able to understand the material as long as she helps structure their learning environment to help them access the information. She also works with students who are nonverbal and are in the early stages of learning language, communication and cause/effect. Again, Gale is able to help structure their learning to help them access information and how to best use the information so they can appropriately and effectively communicate their needs. Although all of our students have a range of cognitive disabilities, some have autism and/or physical disabilities, sensory needs or seizures. Gale becomes informed, is observant, caring, insightful and supportive.
