Having spent most of my time in the work force as a special needs nanny, I cannot speak more about how grateful I am to have been given the opportunity to care for such kind, loving, and day brightening children who have undoubtedly taught me more than I could ever hope to have taught them. Having a mother who worked as a special needs nurse, I spent most of my free time volunteering at Special Olympics and bi-weekly special needs dances. I think what I have learned most about working with special needs children and adults alike, is that it is not about getting them to understand how we see the world, it is understanding how they see the world and adapting to it. I have found that if you figure out a schedule to their life that meets everyone's expectations, they will thrive. It is almost hard to say that seeing the joy on their faces everyday is work, but I am also very well versed in the not so fun aspects. I am no stranger to temper tantrums, or repetition of what needs to be done next. I am also both comfortable and familiar with the daily tasks of a nanny such as, errand running, pick ups/ drop offs, meal prep, play time, anything that can help the parents in any way!
