I have had many experiences with individuals with special needs. Growing up, two of my friends at church had down syndrome, and I would sit with them and spend time with them every Sunday and during other church activities. I also joined a volunteer group at my college where we would partner with a student with disabilities and bring them to our own classes. Through this program I worked with two different students over a year long period. I got very close to them, and I learned valuable skills in interacting and helping individuals with disabilities. Furthermore, I have job shadowed an occupational therapist in a school setting where I watched how the OT interacted with and taught children with disabilities. I plan to follow a career in occupational therapy, so I am eager to continue developing skills to help me better understand and work with individuals with disabilities.
