I teach special education in a resource setting in St. Bernard Parish and I work with children with a wide variety of needs. I have a bachelor's degree from LSU in elementary and special education (mild/moderate). I have also done respite work with a child who has Cri-Du-Chat (rare genetic disorder); the job required me to change diapers, spoon feed, and even work on some academics with him. What got me into the special education field was one summer, when I was still in college, I worked at a summer camp in New Orleans. I was in charge of the 3- and 4-year-old children. There was a little boy who stuck out to me who had autism. I found such joy with working with him that when I went back to school after that summer, I changed my major to Dual Certification (elementary/special education). I truly have a passion for working with special needs kids. I know it gets tough sometimes, but I am 100% dedicated to doing what it takes.
