About who needs care: Dad (96) was Mom's caregiver until a recent fall and shoulder fracture. Mom is 92 and in a wheelchair. Dad was active and independent prior to this. example: driving, golfing and participating in Senior Men's Club activities. He has a housekeeper twice a week but needs some assistance dressing, getting meals and helping Mom if needed. Meals on wheels is being ordered, but breakfast is their largest meal so set up & clean up is needed. They usually get up and dressed & to the breakfast table by 9am, 2 p.m. Ensure and 6 or 6; 30 p.m. dinner. Bed around 10 p.m. Mom & Dad are capable of doing a lot but Mom is forgetful and needs to be gently reminded to get up & dressed & to come to the dining room for meals. Our biggest concern is if Mom calls for help & Dad can't hear her. It's usually because she can't get out of her chair or off the toilet, but with encouragement she is able to do it. I assume we will hire more than one person to handle mornings, dinnertime and bedtime needs, as well as weekend schedules. We can discuss flexibility of days & times to make it work for everyone. They both love their flower gardens & watching birds & squirrels who come to the feeders, we always have a Jigsaw puzzle going & they both help sort pieces. Some personal needs include emptying a bedside commode once/day for Mom and putting lotion on a bedsore for Dad. Dad sometimes needs help with his belt buckle & tucking in his shirt after the bathroom. Setting out their clothes for the next day is also needed at night. About the care needs: The ideal caregiver will be a positive person who will not rush my Mom or Dad and has experience with caring for the elderly and those with dementia. Also someone who has great listening skills and who doesn't mind hearing the same story or lengthy stories. A sense of humor is extremely helpful. Someone who is willing to do what it takes to help them. Example: If on the rare occasion Mom can't make it to the bathroom in time, you keep her calm & get fresh clothes for her to change in to. Rubber gloves are always available, as are Lysol wipes, etc, If you like theatre, mystery shows, reading, Jigsaw Puzzles, gardens, wildlife or travel, you will enjoy them. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
