About who needs care: My dad is a very likable, kind and friendly person, a little shy at first. He is still relatively fit and independent, walking to shops and appointments. His vision is very poor now and declining, due to advanced glaucoma and macular degeneration. He is a Korean War veteran who was in active combat. When he was more able, he loved working with his hands, creating practical and beautiful furniture, stained glass windows, kaleidoscopes. He is slower in the morning, taking a while to get his day started, but when the weather if good enough, he enjoys going out for a long walk midday. I would love to find a loving, kind person who would walk with him, and help him shop. Someone who might be able to drive him to doctor's appointments. Someone who could prepare fresh meals for him (he is currently relying heavily on frozen dinners). About the care needs: Someone with a warm, loving personality would be great! Ideally, they would be curious and interested in engaging my dad in conversation. He spends much time alone, thinking about the past now, and enjoys talking about it. That said, he will probably be turned off by someone who talks too much. As far as special skills, I would say that patience and the willingness to slow down would be very helpful. My dad is kind and adorable, with a very fun sense of humor. He is slower now, and can use gentle reminders when it comes to getting out the door (reading glasses, sunglasses, hearing aid, keys, wallet, etc.) Because of his poor vision, he sometimes has difficulty finding things in his apartment, and reading is a challenge. His career was in civil engineering. He is interested in history. His favorite show now is "The Curse of Oak Island." He spent many years as a docent at the Tucson Zoo. He won't want to talk about politics, but he is pretty middle of the road on that front. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship.
