What is overnight babysitting and how can you hire the right provider?

Need the occasional overnight care for your kids? You may want to consider an overnight babysitter. Here’s what you can expect from one.

What is overnight babysitting and how can you hire the right provider?

Unlike an after-school or date-night sitter, overnight babysitters offer child care when parents aren’t home for all, or a good chunk, of the night. An overnight sitter may be in order when parents are out for the night, or need some to care for the kids in the evening and well into the night (think weddings, late-night holiday parties, etc.)

For once-in-a-while overnight stints, using your normal, go-to sitter is fine, if they’re up for the task, notes Stephanie Fornaro, founder and CEO of boutique agency Hello, Nanny! However, she adds, “Overnight babysitters should, at a minimum, hold a CPR certification.” (For parents who regularly work overnight shifts, an overnight nanny may be in order.)

Whether you have an overnight event coming up or want to be ready for when you do, here’s what to know about overnight babysitting.

Key takeaways

  • Overnight babysitters provide occasional, short-term care when parents are away for part or all of the night, helping maintain routines, respond to wake-ups and handle mornings if needed. They differ from night nannies or newborn care specialists in that they don’t work regular overnight schedules or focus on long-term development.
  • An overnight sitter’s role centers on safety, bedtime routines, overnight responsiveness and light morning help — not staying awake all night or doing household chores. Parents should prioritize CPR certification, references and comfort with emergency protocols when hiring.
  • Overnight babysitting offers flexible, as-needed support for events, travel or emergencies, giving parents peace of mind and rest. It’s a practical option for occasional needs, while families with ongoing overnight care demands may benefit more from a night nanny or newborn care specialist.

What is an overnight babysitter?

A babysitter, by definition, notes Erin Carroll-Manning, founder and CEO of Gentle Giraffes Newborn Care and Family Services in Natick, Massachusetts, is someone who “plays with kids, maybe makes them a meal and watches over them while parents are on a date night or something else.”

“Unlike night nannies, who regularly work overnight shifts and who are household employees, overnight babysitters do not have a recurring or a regular schedule,” she notes.

Put another way: They’re there to provide occasional care overnight when parents need it. They may be needed when parents take a night away, for the birth of a sibling or in an emergency.

What are overnight babysitting duties?

Specific overnight babysitting duties will vary family to family, but here’s what they generally include, according to Fornaro and Stephanie Williams, founder Family Concierge in Rochester, New York:

  • Keeping kids safe and out of danger.
  • Maintaining the evening routine, which may include dinner, bath and helping with homework if needed.
  • Putting the children to bed and maintaining their bed time routine.
  • Responding if kids wake up throughout the night, and checking in on the child overnight.
  • Helping out with the morning routine. If it’s a school day, Williams notes, that may include “a gentle wake-up, breakfast, packing bookbags and lunch, dressing assisting and ensuring kids are on-time for school drop-off.

Tasks, of course, will be tailored to the child’s ages. “I’ve done overnights for babies, toddlers, school-aged children and even for adolescents, and they’ve all looked different,” notes Williams.

What you shouldn’t expect of an overnight babysitter

It shouldn’t be assumed that overnight sitters will stay awake through the night, Fornaro notes.

“They typically sleep when the child sleeps and are able to hear if the kids wake,” she says, adding: “They do not clean the house, run errands and they typically do not drive the kids around.”

It’s also important to note that there’s a difference between babysitters and nannies

“Sitters are not responsible for the ongoing development of the child,” says Fornaro, “just the general care and oversight of their safety.”

“Overnight sitters give parents the ability to travel for work, have quality time with their spouse or have a restful night’s sleep without interruptions on occasion.”

Other types of overnight caregivers

In addition to overnight babysitters, there are a number of caregivers that provide support during the night. Here’s a quick overview of each.

Newborn care specialist (NCS)

An NCS is a highly trained and knowledgeable person who specializes in all things related to newborn care, explains Carroll-Manning, who’s a master newborn care specialist.

“They do overnight shifts, live-in, live-out, 24-hour care, and everything in between,” she adds. “They educate families on various aspects of newborn care, including bathing, swaddling, feeding techniques and how to prevent overtiredness and overstimulation.”

They’re also knowledgeable in things like reflux, circumcision care, sleep, formulas, bottles and other related topics, Carroll-Manning notes. Simply put, newborn care specialists are experts in newborn care.

Night nanny

Find a night nanny

Night nannies are professional nannies that — you guessed it — work at night. Night nannies typically work for families with babies in order to help parents get more sleep. Their schedule is regular, Carroll-Manning notes, adding that they may or may not have formal training and they “take full direction from the family.”

Travel or on-call sitter

A travel or on-call sitter is someone who works on an as-needed basis to travel with the family for vacations and serve as an added layer of support or help out at home when needed, explains Fornaro.

Typically, Carroll-Manning notes, it’s more common for nannies to have on-call roles. “The family should pay the nanny a stipend for being on call,” she says. “Then, the nanny should receive their regular hourly rate when they are called in. The nanny is keeping their time open in case they get called in, and they should be compensated for their time.”

What should parents look for in an overnight sitter?

When it comes to overnight sitters, parents should look for similar traits and qualities they look for in daytime babysitters (Think: responsibility, enthusiasm, initiative and more.).

Additionally, Fornaro notes, look for a candidate who is CPR certified, can produce three verifiable references of families they have worked for in the past and who understand emergency and safety protocols.

“The sitter should also have the ability to pass a background check,” she says.

The bottom line on overnight babysitters

Overnight babysitting allows parents to get away for a night, have someone they trust with the kids when they can’t be there or help out when unexpected situations come up.

But keep in mind, overnight sitters don’t have a regular schedule, like night nannies or newborn care specialists.

As Fornaro concludes, “Overnight sitters give parents the ability to travel for work, have quality time with their spouse or have a restful night’s sleep without interruptions on occasion.”
