Sonbeam Day Care Center

1319 NE 7th Ave, Portland, OR

Starting at $725/mo

(1)
Sonbeam Day Care is a not-for-profit childcare program with preschool provided for all children enrolled. The Center was started by Temple Baptist Church twenty years ago to provide care for the many children represented by the employees in the Lloyd Center community. However, many families from outside this area have realized the convenience of our location to the downtown and many other areas serviced by public transportation. The MAX line delivers people to within four short blocks of Sonbeam and we are located within the free square for parents driving to parking near our facility and hopping the free ride into downtown Portland. Sonbeam Day Care is a developmentally-based daycare center. The main floor is separated into learning centers and classrooms by moveable dividers. Learning centers are designed with appropriate materials to stimulate normal development of the child from 2 1/2 years through kindergarten age. Materials are provided for the child to use according to his or her developmental level of skill and complexity. Children are encouraged, through guidance in their play, to explore the various areas and use materials at a level corresponding to each child's developmental stage and age

Teachers are aware of developmental ages and stages of the children whom they are guiding, and encourage each child to practice new skills, feel confident about already developed skills, and give suggestions for exploring the next skill to develop.

Sonbeam helped me raise my kids. I could have not survived without them. The teachers were kind, creative and felt like family. They taught my kids kindness, manners and all the foundations they needed to start school and be successful. I am so thankful for them, and feel lucky to have found such a wonderful spot for both of my kids to learn and grow.

Chez Play Pdx

1837 SE Ankeny St., Portland, OR

Costimate: $400/wk

Hello there! I am a longtime nanny and childcare provider (15+ years) with years of experience teaching art to elementary students. Over the last eight years, I have worked exclusively with infants, starting from newborn through about 18mos. and I have adored it. My career has solidified and I am now providing infant/early toddler care in my quaint, clean, cozy home. I am excited to be able to help more families seeking quality attention while offering a high level of flexibility. I keep my caregiver to infant ratio low, working with between one and three infants at a time. [Note: After many years of consistently working with multiples, I greatly consider the practicality of the jobs I take and only commit to what I know I can have fun with] Depending on the day's schedule, babies can experience 1-on-1 attention or day-long playful friendships with 1-2 peers.

My style is responsive, silly, relaxed. I cultivate a calm, light demeanor in every experience, even when babies are upset or frustrated. I am inspired by both Magda Gerber's RIE philosophy as well as Montessori for infants, both of which are inspired by independence, and respect for baby as a self-learner. Our days include a steady routine, zero screen time for babies, 80% French language immersion, dancing/singing/music, age-appropriate games, outside time, and quality prepared meals (when the time comes, and with an extra food preparation fee if needed). In addition to engaging in age-appropriate toys and comforts, I am a rain-or-shine nanny/person so whether we walk the backyard, tend to the small front garden, or walk to nearby parks, shops, and schools it is important to me to venture outside daily for fresh air, experience, and play. I am a "yes" caregiver with a "do it!"/"try it!" attitude. I'm not a hoverer and hope to connect with parents who believe kids need lots of personal space, patience, and time to make decisions.

My rate is $15/hr/kid and while I might be managing a schedule online in the future, I am just at the start of this process and am very open to connecting with the right families. Let's chat about your needs!

West Hills Schools Inc.

4920 SW Vermont Street, Portland, OR

Starting at $7.50/session

We hear this often from former West Hills' students enrolling their own children in our program. It always makes us smile because the story of West Hills Montessori is about multiple generations stepping into the same vision.

We opened our first Montessori classroom in 1968, in what has come to be known as the "Little Red Schoolhouse " on SW Vermont Street in Portland.
Seven years ago we opened our Lake Oswego campus, a beautiful facility in the West Lake neighborhood, right off I-5. The Montessori Pathways program is our non-profit sister school which offers quality primary (ages 3 - 6) classroom experiences within an integrated environment that serves both handicapped and non-handicapped children. Learn more about Montessori Pathways ...

Today, West Hills Montessori has 11 classrooms at three different campuses serving children ages 15 months - 12 years. We are committed to the growth and development of each individual child. This commitment to the "whole child" and his/her well-being remains the foundation for our community.

As one of the oldest Montessori programs in Oregon, West Hills has for decades provided the highest quality educational experiences for our students, while spreading awareness and helping to build and support the regional Montessori community. Founder, Nancy H., was instrumental in bringing AMI Montessori Teacher Training to Portland in 1979. West Hills continues to partner with the Montessori Institute NW to host student teachers during each school year. All West Hills teachers are certified by the Association Montessori Internationale.

Over the years our classrooms have multiplied but our mission has remained the same. Generations of children have passed through our doors and gone on to succeed in secondary school and in life. This is our proud legacy. We 're honored to have earned your trust, and look forward to many more years offering the exceptional learning experiences upon which lifelong success is built.

Hawthorne Family Playschool

2828 SE Stevens St, Portland, OR

Starting at $300/mo

Hawthorne Family Playschool's mission is to safeguard childhood, teach inclusion and build cohesive communities. We are an exceptional mixed-age (3-5), play-based, cooperative preschool fostering self-awareness, relationships with others, and connections to the natural world.

Our teacher, Susan Eisman, draws from the practices of Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, Reevaluation Counseling, and peace activism. Susan completed her masters coursework in human development and has been joyfully working with young children and families since 1990. She partners with deeply invested parents to provide a nurturing learning community in which children and families thrive.

Children are eager, capable players who learn with zest in stimulating and affirming environments. They are competent problem solvers when given support. Children find deep satisfaction in following their interests, building relationships, and making friends.

Children learn best when they are connected to nature. We provide natural materials inside and outside the classroom and help children to become good stewards of the earth. HFP is certified as an Eco-Healthy Child Care (EHCC) provider by the Oregon Environmental Council. Our play yard is also recognized by The Audubon Society of Portland as a Certified Backyard Habitat.

We believe participating in a parent-run cooperative is deeply rewarding for the children, their families, and the teacher alike.

We limit class size to 14 children to ensure low student/adult ratios and individualized attention.

Parents assist the teacher in the classroom, working approximately twice every six weeks for families in the 2-day program and three times every six weeks for families in the 3-day program. Parents provide healthy, vegetarian snacks for the class on a rotating basis.

We nurture children's ideas, interests, and feelings as they partner with friends and engage in a wide variety of activities. Adults thoughtfully provision the environment so that children learn wherever they play.
