About who needs care: My dad can most of his daily activities himself, but because he has been diagnosed with mixed Dementia/Alzheimer, hewill need assistance in some areas. My father is very aware and cognizant of his surroundings however, his short term is poor
(he constantly has to refer to the newspaper for the day/date). My dad uses walker(because he has a drop foot) to assist in walking getting around the house (and on occasion has to be reminded to take the walker with him). Needs assistance/reminder to takes daily medication (to include eye drops, and inhaler) and placing hearing aid in both ears. There are times that he needs to be encourage to eat breakfast. He gets a weekly 20 oz "Bob Marley" smoothie with spinach from Turning Natural (because he rarely eats fruits and/or vegetables on a consistent basis). This aids in his bowel movement. His urinal container (which is by his bedside) must be disinfected twice a week using Pine-Sol.
My dad enjoys playing the card (the game is called 500) daily and I play with him at least 1-3 times a day (sometime 4 times). Drinking coffee reading the Washington Post and watching television (these are daily & essential activities that he does). He always eats dinner around 4 pm and watches the Channel 7 evening news for 2-3 hours. Does walking up/down the block depending upon the weather. My dad is a junk eater, and these things are always in the house (Snickers, Pepsi, Klondike bars, Utz Ripple potato chips and Utz cheese popcorn, a lemon cake from H and lastly bottled water). Those items will be in abundance when you arrive and there will no need to replenish these items.
My father is polite, easy to get along with, loves to rehash the "good old days" and talk about current events, but he's accustomed to sticking to a specific regiment.
As far as meals are concern, he will he prepared meals (which is very seldom) because he eats primarily carry-out foods (which I will provide to you.
Finally, my dad knows that I will be on travel for eleven (11) days, and he knows that I will be scheduling caregiver to be there with him while I'm gone. You will not need to wash clothes, take him to any medical/dental appointments, just make sure that he's taking his daily medications, and maybe running errands to get foods the carryout foods that he enjoys eating and/or just preparing an occasional meal for him.
About the care needs: Personality that I am looking for is someone who can hold a conversation with senior, is easy-going (no uptight/easily stressed individual), and an encourager.
The only specialized skill needed is to be respectful, polite and kind (treating my dad the way you want to be treated if the situation was reversed).
Being able to play the card game 500, but I can teach you how to play that. I plan on spending the first few days with you so I can be sure that my dad will feel comfortable with his caregiver.
Services needed include meal preparation, errands / shopping, and light housekeeping. ... more
