Ellen Moore's Child Care

12 Worthington Street, Roxbury Crossing, MA

Starting at $100/day

My program is a small, mixed-age group, and we all become very attached to each other--it really is very much like a family. I am located in Boston, close to the Longwood Medical Area. I have a well-equipped home with three levels of interesting space and a small backyard. We also have a wagon-for-six for trips around the neighborhood, and a minivan filled with car seats (and with a triple stroller folded up in back) for field trips to the zoo, the science museum, and other cool places around Boston. The mixed-age grouping contributes to a cooperative rather than a competitive environment--it's the norm to have a different skill level, since children are different ages, and your friends will just naturally offer to help if you don't know how to do something.

The curriculum is child-centered and play-based, by which I mean that I guide activities mostly by preparing the environment and selecting the playthings. Then I let the children engage in play and discovery. I'm here to model appropriate behavior, set limits, read books, add or subtract materials, keep everybody clean, fed, safe, and loved, and generally keep things moving smoothly. We have a wonderful time!

I have three major goals for the children in my group: positive self-concept, social skills, and language skills. If you are confident and excited about your world and your ideas, know how to make and keep friends, and communicate well, you are well on your way to academic and personal success.

I am licensed for six children, but prefer to have a group of four or five per day, depending on the ages of the children. I sometimes do have six children, when alumni come to visit or when I simply can't work out the schedule any other way. Children typically start the program at age one and continue until age four or five.

I try to provide everything so that parents don't have to pack a huge bag each day. Food, diapers, and field trip expenses are all included in the daily rate--there are no extra charges. I serve a lacto-ovo-vegetarian menu. There are lots of pets--turtle, geckos, fish--which provide a wonderful anchor for the science curriculum, since they all need different food and different environments. We also do things like hatching chicken eggs, planting seeds, making collections of pine cones and other natural objects. A dog and two cats live in the house, and petting and playing with them contribute a lot of comfort and interest. Two openings for 9/20.

I can't recommend Ellen or "Ellen's House" highly enough. Ellen is warm, kind, fun, and just overall a magical person. Kid's love her and she handles all of childhood's woes with grace. My son asks to go to Ellen's House almost every weekend day and is delighted every time at drop off. Ellen sneaks learning into everything the children do and I've especially seen great improvement with my son's emotional regulation. Ellen's home is filled with amazing nooks and play spaces and many fun surprises (a mud kitchen, an outdoor teacup, an indoor ball pit) that add to the magic of the place. We are hooked and will be very sad when my son ages out to Kindergarten!

My husband and I were very satisfied with Tartt's Daycare and how they took care of our twin boys for the past 2 years. I love that it is a family owned business and the staff felt like family as well. From the day our children started, until the day the left, our children were treated as if they were the children of the staff. Our children learned a lot socially, emotionally and educationally from Tartt's and their teachers. We will always thank them for taking such good care of our boys. Thank you to Wanda, Ken and the rest of the Tartt's staff.

To anyone considering sending their children to Sunkissed Acorns: Both my girls attended Sunkissed Acorns from 3 months of age until pre-K and we couldn't possibly recommend them enough. Mabel, Carla, Kelly, Mancy, Ping, and the whole staff at Sunkissed Acorns are incredibly warm, caring, and thoughtful people. In the early days, they helped kids (and us parents) adjust to the daycare drop-off routine and progress through the rapidly advancing developmental phases. Whether it was letting us know when to get bigger diapers, help introducing foods, or reinforcing potty training they were with us every step of the way. In the later years, they taught our girls excellent socialization skills like how to play in groups, manage their belongings, and clean up their messes. On the academics side, they taught our girls letters, numbers, arts, science, and even a bit of Chinese! When COVID-19 took us all by surprise they were temporarily closed like many others, but their communication was clear and consistent throughout. As soon as things were ready to open back up, they implemented thoughtful procedures to maximize hygiene and minimize risk to families and staff. In summary, we absolutely recommend Sunkissed Acorns to any families looking for a safe, diverse, and enriching early education environment.
