12 Worthington Street Boston, MA

My program is a small, mixed-age group, and we all become very attached to each other--it really is very much like a family. I am located in Boston, close to the Longwood Medical Area. I have a well-equipped home with three levels of interesting space and a small backyard. We also have a wagon-for-six for trips around the neighborhood, and a minivan filled with car seats (and with a triple stroller folded up in back) for field trips to the zoo, the science museum, and other cool places around Boston. The mixed-age grouping contributes to a cooperative rather than a competitive environment--it's the norm to have a different skill level, since children are different ages, and your friends will just naturally offer to help if you don't know how to do something. The curriculum is child-centered and play-based, by which I mean that I guide activities mostly by preparing the environment and selecting the playthings. Then I let the children engage in play and discovery. I'm here to model appropriate behavior, set limits, read books, add or subtract materials, keep everybody clean, fed, safe, and loved, and generally keep things moving smoothly. We have a wonderful time! I have three major goals for the children in my group: positive self-concept, social skills, and language skills. If you are confident and excited about your world and your ideas, know how to make and keep friends, and communicate well, you are well on your way to academic and personal success. I am licensed for six children, but prefer to have a group of four or five per day, depending on the ages of the children. I sometimes do have six children, when alumni come to visit or when I simply can't work out the schedule any other way. Children typically start the program at age one and continue until age four or five. I try to provide everything so that parents don't have to pack a huge bag each day. Food, diapers, and field trip expenses are all included in the daily rate--there are no extra charges. I serve a ovo-lacto vegetarian menu. There are lots of pets--turtle, geckos, fish--which provide a wonderful anchor for the science curriculum, since they all need different food and different environments. We also do things like hatching chicken eggs, planting seeds, making collections of pine cones and other natural objects. A dog and two cats live in the house, and petting and playing with them contribute a lot of comfort and interest.

Michael W. says "Our daughter has been going to Ellen's House for a year and a half and we're already dreading the eventual day that we no longer get to hand off our...

I want to see growth and development in the kids. That is the key aspect of my program for me. I believe that communication, consistency, and structure are key elements to growth and development. I also value the communication and relationship with parents, because that's where everything starts. I know that if the children see a good bond between the parents and me, it is easier for the children to bond with me too. I even encourage parents, when they can, to stay with the kids in my home for an hour or so the first couple of days in the program so that the children ease into it better. I strive for both parents and children to feel comfortable to ensure the highest level of care, growth, and development. I am always there for the parents, whether they need my help as an emergency on a weekend or want to drop by the program anytime during the day. They might catch us doing some of our favorite activities, like circle time where they all can participate, floor activities, or playing music. I treat each child as my own but adhere to what parents say is best. I am very attentive to allergies and am happy to give the children preferred snacks provided by the parents. Yellow School House

996 South St. Boston, MA

I am a homeschooling Mom of 3 boys, a first-grader, kindergartner and pre-schooler. When we started homeschooling we lived in a yellow house and called our school the Yellow Schoolhouse, and even though we live in a white house in Boston (Roslindale/West Roxbury area) now, the name has stuck. I began homeschooling because I was not satisfied with the education my oldest son was receiving in one of the "best" school systems in Massachusetts. We have so much fun at the Yellow Schoolhouse. I try to blend traditional teaching with Montessori methods, to hit upon all of my sons' varied learning styles. We cover Spelling, Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Handwriting, Creative Writing, Art and Music. We read a lot of children's literature and do tons of hands-on projects. We turn new concepts into games every chance we get. My children are well ahead of their grade levels, and I attribute that mainly to the one-on-one attention they receive on a daily basis. If you have ever thought about homeschooling your child, but didn't know if it was the right fit for you, this may be a great option. I am CORI background checked, first-aid and CPR trained. I hold a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Furman University. I had a successful career as the New England Regional Training Coordinator of a Fortune 200 insurance company. I adore children - I love studying their development, learning styles, and behavior patterns. I believe in empowering children to make great choices on their own, not telling them what their choice will be. I believe in order and boundaries, but I also believe in having a whole lot of fun within those boundaries. I am looking to add 1-2 PreK-2nd grade aged children to our school. My boys will love to have the extra playmate(s) and I will be able to provide your child with an excellent, individualized education. I will provide all the healthy snacks and meals. Hours are possible between 7:30 and 5:30 as needed. $250 per week. A school portfolio and references can be provided. I look forward to meeting you and your child. ouryellowschoolhouse.blogspot.com

Are you in need of CHILDCARE? I am licensed by EEC and I have 2 openings I would like to fill even though I am licensed for eight; I believe the ratio should be 2 or more providers caring for 8 children. Currently I have an 18 month old and a newborn. The ideal child, male or female, would be 15 months old and walking. I have space for after school children as well just in case there is an older sibling. I give consideration for siblings, an example would be...($125 wkly for full-time child, sibling will get $50 discount so weekly total for two children would be $165, instead of $200). I provide a safe, cozy home environment where children can play, learn and grow to their individual potential across all of their developmental domains. Healthy meals & snacks, nurture, we participate in monthly fire-drills, when weather permits we enjoy outdoors twice per day and children brush their teeth between meals. I am CPR certified and a student to obtain my BA in the field of Early Child Development this year 2013. I am fun, caring and consistent.
