Just Some of the Activities and Projects: • Brainstorming Opening: What does a great game player look like? (attributes, character traits, etc.) • Number Routines: Daily brain energizing number riddles, puzzles, and games to wake up the mathematical brain and make connections among math concepts. • GAME ON: Campers will get a real workout each day playing math games with partners and in small groups where learning math is fun. • Math Game Design: Students will work in groups to create their own math game, including rules, materials, and a way to win.

K-2 Session 4: Measurement and Data Detectives

Get ready for an exciting adventure in our Measurement and Data Detectives Math Workshop Session! We'll become measuring experts, using rulers, yardsticks, and measuring tapes to find out just how long things really are! We'll even see what happens when we measure the same thing with different-sized units! Then, we'll become estimation superstars, making smart guesses about lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters! We'll compare objects to see how much longer one is than the other and use our adding and subtracting skills to solve length word problems. But that's not all! We'll become time-telling heroes, reading clocks to the nearest five minutes and understanding a.m. and p.m.! And get ready to become money-wise mavens, solving problems with dollars and cents. Finally, we'll become data detectives, creating cool graphs – picture graphs and bar graphs – to show what we've found! We'll even solve puzzles using the information in our graphs! Get ready for hands-on activities, measuring challenges, time-telling games, money mysteries, and data discoveries. Let's measure, graph, and explore together!

Through engaging activities, creative constructions, and real-world applications, we’ll transform into true geometry explorers! Get ready to embark on a geometry adventure where you’ll explore, create, and discover the beauty and power of shapes! What We’ll Explore: Shape Detectives: We’ll begin by sharpening our shape-detecting skills! We’ll classify polygons based on their attributes (sides, vertices, edges, angles), explore the relationships between different quadrilaterals, and even create our own shape classification systems. Get ready to think like a mathematician and justify your reasoning! Angle Adventures: Prepare to become angle experts! We’ll learn to measure angles with precision, explore different types of angles (acute, obtuse, right, straight), and discover the relationships between angles, such as complementary and supplementary angles. We’ll even use our angle knowledge to solve puzzles and create geometric art. 3D Shape Construction: Let’s build beyond the flat surface! We’ll investigate three-dimensional shapes, identify their faces, edges, and vertices, and learn about nets. We’ll use hands-on materials to construct our own 3D models using toothpicks and clay and explore concepts like surface area and volume in an intuitive way. Through hands-on activities and real-world applications, we’ll discover how measurement and data help us make sense of the world around us. What We’ll Explore: Data Analysis Detectives: Once we have our graphs, it’s time to analyze! We’ll learn to interpret data presented in graphs, calculate measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), and understand the concept of range. We’ll use our analytical skills to draw conclusions and make predictions based on the data. Measurement Mania: We’ll explore different units of measurement (customary and metric) for length, weight, volume, and time. Through practical activities, we’ll learn to convert between units, estimate measurements, and develop a strong sense of how different units relate to each other. Data Collection Expedition: Every great data exploration starts with collection! We’ll learn various methods for collecting data, such as surveys, experiments, and observations.
