Cary, NC
Ready to decompose numbers, Subtraction Superheroes? Get Ready to Take Away! Join our fun-filled Math Workshop Session where we'll become subtraction experts! Learn all about "taking apart" and "taking from" with amazing objects, your own fingers, by acting out subtraction stories, and exploring a host of subtraction strategies to use that make sense! Some of the subtraction strategies we will explore: adding up, removing or counting back, place value, keeping a constant distant, and adjusting one number to create an easier problem. We'll solve exciting subtraction word problems and become subtraction stars. Discover how to break down numbers in lots of different ways. Let's build on what we know about addition to make a case for the connection to subtraction. Plus, we'll find those special number partners that make 10 and 100. And guess what? Let's subtract, explore, and become number whizzes together!

Cary, NC
Get ready to become a fraction and decimal master! This engaging Math Workshop Session is designed for 5th and 6th graders to develop their skills in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and decimals. Through hands-on activities and real-world applications, we’ll take the mystery out of fractions and decimals and discover how they work in everyday life. What We’ll Explore: Word Problems: Put your fraction and decimal skills to the test! We’ll tackle a variety of word problems that involve all four operations with fractions and decimals, helping you see how they are used in everyday situations. Foundations: We’ll start by building a solid understanding of what fractions represent, including mixed numbers and improper fractions as well as decimals. We’ll use visual models like fraction bars and circles, decimal grids, and number line models to explore equivalent fractions and decimals and compare their values. Adding and Subtracting: Get ready to add and subtract fractions with both like and unlike denominators as well as decimals! We’ll learn how to find common denominators and use visual aids to help us understand the process. We’ll also explore real-world scenarios where adding and subtracting fractions and decimals is essential. Multiplying: We’ll make multiplying fractions and decimals a breeze! Through hands-on activities, we’ll discover how to multiply fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers, and see how it relates to finding parts of a whole. Dividing: Unlocking the division of fractions and decimals! We’ll use visual models and real-world problems to understand the concept of dividing fractions and decimals and learn how to perform this operation with confidence.
