Penny's Daycare

13128 Marigold St. NW, Minneapolis, MN

I have been a licensed childcare provider for 32 years. I believe there is no greater investment for a better future than to positively influence the lives of children. I have two children of my own, who are now grown adults, but they mean everything to me, as I know your child/children mean to you also. I strive to build self esteem, nurture a positive self image, and provide a secure learning environment in an atmosphere of joy and care for each child. There is lots of hugs and love to go around.

I am enrolled in the food program, and also provide a daily learning curriculum for 3 to 5 years old (September - May) that is included in your weekly cost. I also do many fun learning activities with the children under 3 years old, and with the right learning tools, all ages can participate. I find with kids that at any age there's never an end to how far you can go with learning. There are so many tools out there that encourage learning, and make it fun and something they look forward to each day.

During the summer time we spend a lot of time outside as long as the weather cooperates. We incorporate learning activities into outdoor play time, too. I run a structured daycare but I also am a believer that a "kid needs to be a kid" at times and use their imagination and let them have a day once in a while to just do whatever they want to do. Those sometimes are their favorite days!

Activities for the children include: playing outside (fenced in backyard), going to the park, playing board games, doing arts and crafts, and many learning activities (puzzles, building blocks, baking, color and shape games and so much more).

This is just a sneak peak of what I have to offer. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions. References available upon request.

Acorn Academy

1555 Constance Blvd NE, Andover, MN

Costimate: $202/wk

Acorn Academy Preschool in Ham Lake, MN, provides a safe, excellent preschool program that instills in children a love for school and a belief that they are loved, capable, and created by God for a special plan and purpose.
We offer half-day and extended day classes Monday/Wednesday/Friday and Tuesday/Thursday.

We use a learning center approach to curriculum to facilitate the development of the whole child (social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual). Children learn and grow through play. Our experienced and caring staff is committed to guiding and nurturing your child as s/he interacts and experiments within our safe and loving atmosphere. Our kids enjoy chapel every Wednesday and Thursday. We also offer music class with a licensed teacher once each week and Spanish class twice per week.

Our goals are bigger than helping children learn to count and read. While academic skills and preparation for kindergarten are important, the whole child is even more important. At Acorn Academy, we value and foster every part of learning. We look at the end goal - we want children to leave Acorn Academy with feelings of confidence and security, an excitement and love for learning, and faith that God is real and God is with them.

This means that in science, teaching children to experiment (wonder, ask questions, observe, try new things, and persevere) is more important than teaching them precisely why an experiment works. In literacy, building children's vocabulary, comprehension, and processing skills is more important than emphasizing vowel sounds and sight words. We emphasize conversation, discussion, and word play (rhyming, integration of letter sounds, songs and games) over rote memorization or lessons. In writing, allowing children space to practice their fine motor skills and opportunities to do so in a fun and engaging way will serve them better than sitting down together to do worksheets. In art, we value exploration, texture, creativity, and sensory experience (process) over crafts (product). As a Christian preschool we naturally intertwine a spiritual worldview throughout our daily interactions and activities.

Provider's Biography

I have always had an interest in child care. From the age of 12, I was babysitting. I started my career off with a 2 month old boy. Little did I know that I would be with that family for 14 years. They had 4 children in that time, 3 boys and 1 girl. I was a date night sitter on Wednesdays and a full time nanny in the summer. I also stayed with them on weekends while parents went on vacation. They even stayed at my house once I was married. A few years later, I took in a 1 year old boy for a little over a year. Most of my experience comes from being a mother myself. I am a mom of 2 boys, 6 and 3 and have been married for 10 years.

Story behind Think Big Child Care

Even though I enjoy and cherish being home with my boys, I felt that I needed a higher purpose than just being the one that does the laundry, cooking and cleaning. Since I am home anyway, I love to teach, plan and organize and have the space, opening a home daycare seemed to be the perfect thing to do. I could provide a valuable service to working families, help contribute financially to the household, and still be home with my children.

PHILOSOPHY

Jessica's philosophy is based upon the respect for children, their cultural background, developmental level, natural curiosity, and learning styles. I believe children learn best through play. Although this is not a preschool, we will have school time where we learn science, math, spelling, art an more. I will support your child in a safe, nurturing environment that promotes positive self-image, independence, self-confidence and healthy living skills. I strive to provide children with the opportunities to participate in their environment with their whole beings.

My goal is to foster each child's natural urge to grow, discover and challenge him/herself. I believe that quality, educational group childcare is a positive and beneficial experience for children and families. Parents need to feel comfortable, informed, secure and involved in the care their child is receiving.

The atmosphere in my home is warm, calm and stimulating. Think Big Child Care is designed to promote the safety and well being of the children at their various stages of development. I value each child as an individual and work to provide an environment and experiences that encourage exploration, discovery and invention. Children are always learning about themselves and their world, whether snuggling in a lap, playing in the sandbox, listening to a story, engaging in dramatic play, painting, running or climbing. Every experience provides an opportunity for children to identify and express their feelings, assert themselves, listen to others, negotiate and resolve conflicts. I pay special attention to building self-esteem and promoting social relationships.
