Companion Care Needed For My Father In Dedham - Hello,
My father...
$15 – $25/hr • Part time • Starts May 7 • Dedham, MA
About who needs care: Hello,
My father, T, is 92 years old. He is living in a small apartment in Dedham, on the first floor. He is able tomanage quite a bit on his own but needs companionship, help with organization, reminders, occasional help with errands, light housework... Maybe some help with rides to the VA in W Rox for occasional appts. He is Mobil and uses a walker. He still drives (which we are trying to get him away from). He likes to tell stories about his life. He has written over 10 books about his life in fact. The apartment is clean- but he has books everywhere. He benefits from short walks outside with his walker and a companion. He has been diagnosed with dementia but it only creates problems when he tries to use technology. The TV, the computer, his phone... ugh. So we try to stay away from that:) He has a small DVD player and he loves to watch historical documentaries. He can talk about Winston Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt until the cows come home. He is proud of his Irish heritage and has great stories about his grandmother, grandfather, uncles, cousins... He is educated with a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in History- loves to talk about BC and BU. He has 4 children (one recently deceased) and is divorced from my mother (lives in Canton, MA).
About the care needs: T current caregiver is wonderful, but she is graduating from Nursing School in May and will be leaving us in August. She is in her early 20s, soft spoken but engaging, laughs a lot at his stories, is really laid back, respectful .... (He does not do well with bold personalities or being "interviewed" or talked to like a child). She follows his lead in terms of conversation, "projects" etc. She is very neat and organized- helps him with his calendar, checks his med organizer, occasionally makes calls for him, creates sets of directions for things like the phone, TV remote... Heats up dinner for him (frozen meals), puts out his laundry for pick up... empties the trash.... stuff like that. Mostly, she is a friend to him. She is Irish and looks a lot like people in our family so she feels like family to him.
Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship. ... more
