Math Fundamentals 1A: Early Number Exploration

    by The Math Workshop

6-week session/ 45-minute virtual sessions, that's 4 and 1/2 hours of learning! Oct. 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24, Dec. 1 9:30-10:15am Join our virtual workshops and discover the power of early number exploration! This workshop is designed to provide students with practical strategies and visual tools for understanding foundational addition and subtraction concepts. The focus will be on developing a deep understanding of numbers and their relationships, rather than just memorizing facts. I. Adding and Subtracting with Visuals: Concrete Representations We will explore addition and subtraction within 10 using engaging and effective visual models. These tools help students move from concrete objects to abstract mathematical thinking. Ten Frames: The ten frame is a foundational tool for building number sense. We will use ten frames to help students visualize numbers and to understand the concept of "making a ten." For example, to solve 7 + 3, we can show 7 dots in the ten frame and see that there are 3 empty spots. Adding 3 more dots fills the frame, visually demonstrating that the sum is 10. Dot Images: We will use dot images (like those found on dice or dominoes) to help students instantly recognize small quantities without counting (subitizing). This skill is crucial for developing fluency with addition and subtraction. For example, by showing a dot image of 5 and a dot image of 3, students can quickly see the total is 8. Other Visuals: We will also explore other simple visuals like finger counting, number lines, and counters to show how different representations can support understanding of the same operation. II. The Relationship Between Addition and Subtraction A core focus of this workshop is the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. We will use the visual models from the first section to demonstrate how addition and subtraction "undo" each other. Fact Families: We will introduce the concept of a "fact family" to show how three numbers are connected through both addition and subtraction. For example, using the numbers 3, 4, and 7, we can write the following four related equations: 3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 - 3 = 4, and 7 - 4 = 3. Understanding this relationship empowers students to solve problems and check their work. Missing Addends: We will frame subtraction problems as "missing addend" problems. For example, instead of just solving 8 - 3, we can ask, "3 plus what number equals 8?" This encourages students to think about the relationship between the two operations and reinforces the idea of finding a missing part. This workshop will provide students with a solid understanding of foundational number concepts and a toolkit of effective, research-based strategies to help themselves become confident and flexible mathematical thinkers.

    Online Advanced Exploration Weekly

    99%

    by Art Moki

This series of five classes emphasizes personal responsibility. Students create projects of their own design and grow to become independent artists. Warm up exercises will also enhance technical, conceptual, observation and intuitive processes. New Advanced Exploration (ADEX) students will begin the series with a couple preliminary projects which will teach students how to design projects and manage their own art space. Our teachers are prepared to teach both two dimensional and sculpture online, but individualized demonstrations are only two dimensional at this time. What you’ll need: - A sketchbook - Space to work - Electronic device with webcam and microphone - Students must provide their own materials. Contact info@artmoki.com with questions about supplies.

Teen Writer’s Salon (hosted by SJAWP's Teen Novel Writing Program)

    100%

by San Jose Area Writing Project

SJAWP Novel Writing Program: Writer’s Salon & Workshop Calling all teen writers who want a community with whom to share writing without the commitment of a full length course! Our Teen Writer's Salon is a space in which students can write alongside other teens and workshop writing while making friends with other budding novelists. Our Writer's Salon will meet three times this fall for live zoom sessions that begin with a prompt and writing warm up followed by student readings of works in progress. We have built this space to allow students to stay connected to our Teen Writer's Institute programs and to experience the writing community offered by our Novel Writing Program. There will be no set lectures or assignments; rather, in this course, students will write together and receive peer feedback in a process facilitated by our author in residence, Hannah Jayne. Come join us and walk away with notes on a piece of writing, a peer group connected by the common pursuit of a creative writing life, and a clearer idea of how to make writing fit into your busy lifestyle! Zoom Classes will be held from 11am - 12:30pm on the following dates: September 20 October 18 November 15 December 6

Level 1 - The Thinker ( Problem Solving with Python & Programming Basics ) - Quarterly / Half yearly / Monthly

    by MathCodeLab

Outcome Introduces beginners to programming fundamentals, focusing on logic, coding, and systems through hands-on Python activities. Students build a strong foundation for further learning. Students learn core skills like problem-solving and pattern recognition by tackling relatable challenges such as optimizing a store checkout line showing how these abilities apply across fields from tech to medicine to the arts. We begin with practical problems before introducing technical concepts, ensuring students grasp the “why” behind what they learn. This hands-on, engaging approach sparks creativity, builds confidence, and equips students with versatile skills for any future path.

    Math Fundamentals 4B: Division Exploration

    by The Math Workshop

6-week session/ 45-minute virtual sessions, that's 4 and 1/2 hours of learning! Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 11, 18, 25, Dec. 2 9:30-10:15am Join our virtual workshops and discover the power of division exploration! This workshop is designed for students to build a solid foundation for understanding division. We will move beyond rote memorization of facts to explore the conceptual underpinnings of division, making it a more intuitive and meaningful operation for learners. I. Understanding the Concept of Division: Grouping and Sharing Models We will begin by establishing the two fundamental models of division: sharing and grouping. Using hands-on manipulatives, we will differentiate between these two concepts. Sharing: A quantity is distributed equally among a known number of groups. For example, "49 cookies are shared equally among 7 friends. How many cookies does each friend get?" Here, the number of groups is known, and we are solving for the size of each group. Grouping: A quantity is grouped into a known size. For example, "You have 49 cookies and want to put 7 cookies in each bag. How many bags can you fill?" Here, the size of each group is known, and we are solving for the number of groups. Understanding this distinction is crucial for problem-solving and selecting appropriate strategies. II. Visualizing Division: The Case of 48 ÷ 6 Next, we will take a deeper dive into the specific problem of 48 ÷ 6, using a variety of visual models to demonstrate the different ways to think about this operation. Arrays: We will arrange 48 objects into a rectangular array. By forming rows of 6, we can see that there are 6 columns, visually representing 48 ÷ 6 = 8. This model beautifully connects to the concept of repeated subtraction. Area Model: We will use a visual area model to show a rectangle with an area of 30 square units. If one side length is 3, we can determine the other side length is 10. This model builds a strong connection between division and geometry. Multiple Strategies: Beyond arrays and area models, we will explore other strategies such as repeated subtraction on a number line, skip counting, and using manipulatives. This section will highlight that there isn't just one way to solve a division problem. III. The Relationship Between Multiplication and Division Finally, we will explore the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. We will use the models we've built to demonstrate how 35 ÷ 5 = 7 is directly related to 5 × 7 = 35. Understanding this relationship is a powerful tool for solving problems and checking for accuracy. We will introduce the concept of a "fact family" to solidify this understanding, showing how the numbers 5, 7, and 35 are interconnected through both multiplication and division. This workshop will provide students with practical strategies to make the concept of division clear, accessible, and engaging for all learners.
