This tour is a three hour guided zipline tour, including Oahu's longest ziplines ranging from 500 feet to nearly half a mile long. You'll also learn about Hawaii's rich history and culture all while taking in panoramic ocean and mountain views of Oahu's famous North Shore.

Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 11, 18, 25, Dec. 2 11:00-11:45am Join our virtual workshops and discover the power of fraction exploration! This workshop is designed to equip students with the tools and strategies to help learners develop a deep conceptual understanding of fractions. We will move beyond the "part-of-a-whole" definition to explore fractions as meaningful numbers that can be compared, ordered, and used in calculations. I. Fractions as Numbers: Beyond the Part-of-a-Whole We will begin by establishing that fractions are not just parts of a whole but are numbers in their own right, each with a specific location on the number line. We will use visual tools like fraction strips and number lines to demonstrate how fractions like 1/2 or 3/4 have a definite magnitude and can be ordered just like whole numbers. We will also explore the concept of unit fractions (fractions with a numerator of 1), as they are the building blocks for all other fractions. II. Exploring Key Fraction Concepts: Equivalence and Comparison This section will focus on two critical fraction concepts: equivalence and comparison. Equivalent Fractions: Using visual tools like pattern blocks and fraction strips, we will visually demonstrate how different fractions can represent the same value. For example, we will see that 1/2 is the same size as 2/4 and 3/6. This visual understanding is key to preparing learners for fraction operations. Fraction Comparison: We will explore multiple strategies for comparing fractions, including comparing them to a benchmark fraction (like 1/2) and finding common denominators. Visual models will be used to show why, for example, 3/4 is greater than 2/3. III. Multiple Models and Tools for Conceptual Understanding To ensure a comprehensive understanding, we will explore fractions through a variety of models and visual tools. Number Line: We will use number lines to help students visualize fractions as points in space, emphasizing that fractions have a magnitude and are numbers just like any other. Area Model: Using visual models like fraction strips and pattern blocks, we will partition shapes into equal parts to represent fractions. This is a foundational model for understanding the "part-of-a-whole" concept. Set Model: We will use discrete visual objects to represent fractions, such as "3 out of 5 apples are red." This model is helpful for connecting fractions to real-world scenarios.

Oct. 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24, Dec. 1 11:00-11:45am Join our virtual workshops and discover the power of addition and subtraction exploration! This workshop is designed to provide students with a toolbox of visual models and strategies for learning addition and subtraction up to 50. The goal is to move beyond simple memorization of facts, building a deep conceptual understanding that fosters number sense and flexibility. I. Adding and Subtracting with Visuals: Concrete to Abstract We will explore addition and subtraction through a variety of powerful visual models that make these operations tangible and intuitive. Ten Frames: We will use ten frames to help students visualize numbers and to understand the "making a ten" strategy. For example, to solve 8 + 5, we can show 8 in one ten frame and then move 2 from the 5 to complete the ten, leaving 3 in the second ten frame, revealing the sum of 13. Hundred Chart: The hundred chart is an excellent tool for visualizing number relationships and developing strategies like adding or subtracting by 10. We will show how to add 23 + 10 by simply moving down one row on the chart. Base 10 Block Visuals: We will use visuals of base 10 blocks (ones and tens) to represent numbers. Students will compare the place value and understand the magnitude of numbers. II. Multiple Strategies for Flexible Thinking We will highlight that there isn't just one way to solve an addition or subtraction problem. We will explore and practice a variety of strategies to help students develop flexibility and choose the most efficient method. Counting On/Counting Back: We will use a number line to visualize counting on for addition and counting back for subtraction. This strategy is particularly useful for smaller numbers. Making a Ten: As demonstrated with ten frames, this is a powerful strategy for sums over ten. For example, 7 + 6 can be solved as 7 + 3 + 3 = 10 + 3 = 13. Decomposing Numbers: We will show how to break down numbers to make problems easier. For example, to solve 48 - 9, we can decompose the 9 into 8 and 1. We then solve 48 - 8 = 40, and then 40 - 1 = 39. III. The Relationship Between Addition and Subtraction Finally, we will explore the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. Using the visual models from the first section, we will demonstrate how addition and subtraction "undo" each other. We will use the concept of a "fact family" to show how the numbers 12, 5, and 7 are connected through both addition (5 + 7 = 12) and subtraction (12 - 5 = 7 and 12 - 7 = 5). This understanding is a crucial building block for algebraic thinking and for checking work. By the end of this workshop, students will have a deeper understanding of number relationships and a range of effective visual tools and strategies to help themselves become confident and flexible with addition and subtraction up to 50.

Key Concepts and Learning Objectives: Conceptualizing Multiplication: We will begin by defining multiplication as repeated addition and as a way to find the total number of items in a set of equal groups. Visual Models for Multiplication: Participants will learn and create various visual models to represent multiplication facts up to 7x7, including: Arrays: Arranging objects in rows and columns to demonstrate the commutative property (a×b=b×a). Area Model: Using grid paper or tiles to visualize multiplication as finding the area of a rectangle. Equal Groups: Drawing or manipulating objects to form a specified number of equal groups. Multiple Strategies for Solving: We will explore a variety of strategies to solve multiplication problems beyond counting one-by-one, such as: Skip Counting: Counting by a given number to find the product. Decomposition: Breaking down a problem into smaller, more manageable parts (e.g., 3×4=3×(2+2)=(3×2)+(3×2)). Properties of Operations: The workshop will introduce the foundational properties of operations and their connection to multiplication: Commutative Property: The order of the factors does not change the product (3×5=5×3). Distributive Property: How multiplication distributes over addition (e.g., 4×5=4×(2+3)=(4×2)+(4×3)).
