Join us on a journey through three of New Orleans’ hallowed cemeteries. On this tour, your master storyteller will lead you through the maze of above-ground tombs in St. Patrick # 1, St. Patrick Cemetery #2, and the Katrina Memorial at Charity Hospital Cemetery. From burial customs and traditions- to the history of the Masons and Catholics in New Orleans- to the deaths of the thousands buried in the graveyard behind the Katrina Memorial, this tour will leave you with feelings of trepidation and excitement, as well as with a reverence for our city’s incredible history. This is a narrated 1.5 to 2 hour walking tour. You may bring your own beverages!

This tour provides an insider’s perspective, with opportunities to walk around on your own and take in the rich history of New Orleans. Relax in our bus with small group sizes and visit historic neighborhoods, including the French Quarter, Treme, Faubourgs St. John and Marigny, Garden and Warehouse Districts as well as a stop in one of our St. Louis Cemeteries. WEST-AFRICAN Captured for their agricultural and construction skills, their work created the Louisiana colony and influenced all segments of the newly-forming Creole culture, best seen today in language, cuisine, music, family-centered traditions, architecture and life-style. This sugarcane plantation started in 1805 with 7 enslaved people (six west-Africans and one Amerindian). As the plantation grew, so did the number of enslaved workers. Four original slave cabins built in the 1840s remain standing today on the plantation. By the onset of the Civil War, 186 workers were enslaved on this farm. Following the emancipation of slaves in Louisiana (1866), the great majority of these former slaves continued to live in the Laura Plantation quarters. Descendants of these men & women were displaced in 1895 when cypress lumber companies had their own workers inhabit the Laura slave quarters. The cabins were lived in until 1977. Descendants of slaves live near the Laura Plantation to this day.

In these neighborhoods (the Old Square, Faubourg Tremé, Fauboug Marigny, etc.) French and Creole were the dominant languages until the 1950s. The tour ends in American neighborhoods (Lakeview, Carrolton, Garden District, etc.) founded in the early 19th century. The presentation of each corner of the city is dotted with anecdotes about the famous characters who once lived in the City of Creoles. The preservationist fire of Elizabeth Werlein - this woman's fire saved rather than destroyed. Madame LaLaurie's horrors told not through haunted legend, but the cruelty of racial violence cloaked in wealth and elegance laid bare. Marie Laveau—Voodoo Queen, healer, mystic, and more. Rose Nicaud, once-enslaved, she carved out a life selling coffee —one of the city’s first Black, female entrepreneurs. Women who didn’t just live in New Orleans. They built her, saw her broken, and resurrected her.
