I have been babysitting for close family friends, since I was about 9 years old. My mother has done in-home Daycare, for 18 years. During the day she has approximately 6-8 kids, while the older kids are at school. Since the age of 16, I have been legally able to help, with her daycare. Since that time, I have spent many full-time days watching and caring for her daycare kids.
I am currently living at home, while attending classes at Southeast Community College.
At the beginning of the year 2010, we opened up our house to foster kids. Since then, we have had about eight kids, in and out. Currently and for the last four months, we have four foster girls living with us, in our home. The girls ages are 9, 12, 15, and 15 years old. Three girls are sisters, with behavioral problems.
I have always wanted to get involved with social work, and watching my mom open our house to these foster kids, confirms that I want to help, and teach as many kids as possible.
While on one of my church mission trips, I took part in getting a camp ready for abused children. After hearing and learning about the camp, it really struck my attention and opened my eyes, that there are many children out there, struggling. Not only do I enjoy helping others, I enjoy just being around and playing with children. I love seeing a smile on the children's faces as they learn something new, or accomplish a new goal.
For a short time I was a part time Mentor for a 12-year-old boy, with mild retardation and many sociological problems. With him, we went to the park, went fishing, swam, and played outside. He is now in a behavioral program, where he has 24 hour care, by professionals.
My 42-year-old uncle is severally handicapped, and lives at home with my Grandmother. Throughout my high school years, I cared for my uncle, while my grandma worked. I was there to watch over and be a guardian, if anything were to go wrong.
