Gr 5-6 Session 2: Geometry Geniuses

    by The Math Workshop

    Cary, NC

Get ready to unfold the world of shapes! This dynamic Geometry Math Workshop Session is designed for 5th and 6th graders to go beyond identifying shapes and dive into the fascinating properties and relationships within geometry. Through engaging activities, creative constructions, and real-world applications, we’ll transform into true geometry explorers! Get ready to embark on a geometry adventure where you’ll explore, create, and discover the beauty and power of shapes! What We’ll Explore: Shape Detectives: We’ll begin by sharpening our shape-detecting skills! We’ll classify polygons based on their attributes (sides, vertices, edges, angles), explore the relationships between different quadrilaterals, and even create our own shape classification systems. Get ready to think like a mathematician and justify your reasoning! Angle Adventures: Prepare to become angle experts! We’ll learn to measure angles with precision, explore different types of angles (acute, obtuse, right, straight), and discover the relationships between angles, such as complementary and supplementary angles. We’ll even use our angle knowledge to solve puzzles and create geometric art. 3D Shape Construction: Let’s build beyond the flat surface! We’ll investigate three-dimensional shapes, identify their faces, edges, and vertices, and learn about nets. We’ll use hands-on materials to construct our own 3D models using toothpicks and clay and explore concepts like surface area and volume in an intuitive way. Geometry in the Real World: Geometry isn’t just confined to the classroom! We’ll discover how geometry is used in architecture, design, art, and even nature. From identifying shapes in buildings to understanding the geometry of a spiderweb, we’ll see how geometry plays a vital role in the world around us. Coordinate Plane Creations: We will learn how to use the coordinate plane. We’ll learn how points are located and how to plot them. We will use these skills to create geometric shapes and designs.

Body: Nathan is the perfect candidate for a teaching position. Above his knowledge and skills, Nathan demonstrated patience and kindness when teaching my nephew Manny. Name: Oswald Thomas Date: 2017-07-10 19:36:10 Title: Teacher of Mathematics Body: It is with great honor and pleasure that I am writing this letter on behalf of Nathan. I have known Nathan for the past two years, and I’m privileged to have been his teacher of mathematics for those two years. I have observed during this time a very unique young man with excellent manners, good academic ability, and strong leadership skills. Nathan is only a junior who has been able to become an outstanding figure here at University High School. He strove to earn the respect of both the faculty and the students by portraying a positive attitude and establishing himself as an outstanding role model. He has risen to become a strong leader for his peers and has achieved academically as well. As a student in my class, Nathan is always taking on challenging assignments, even when he doesn’t receive any credit for these assignments. He usually can be found reading, studying, or helping his fellow students, when he is not too busy doing tedious algebraic calculations. It is with this attitude and through his perseverance that he has attained such a high level of success. In his academics he strives to gain the respect of his teachers and put the best effort possible into his work. Many students have failed to reach their inner potential while Nathan has soared to establish himself among the best that UHS has to offer. This type of maturity and dedication is an attribute to Nathan’s ranking as one of the top students in our International Baccalaureate Program. Nathan has also participated in many academic, civic, athletic, and social groups within our school and the community. It is through his membership in these groups and his role as a leader that he helped to shape the scholastic climate for University High School. Nathan has completed many community service hours through various community service projects and service learning as part of IB and graduation requirements. While doing these projects he executed his responsibilities in a very mature and professional manner. Please accept my recommendation for Nathan to work in your establishment; I believe that he will be an asset to any institution, organization, firm, or business that gives him the opportunity to demonstrate the qualities alluded to above. Nathan is a gentleman in the making; I am honored to be his teacher!!

During my time in college, I helped make ends meet by working as a freelance music instructor. I've taught early grade school children, all the way up through retired seniors looking for a new hobby. I now work and live in Orlando Florida with my wife. I am a freelance music instructor as well as a clinican and an accompanist for Orange County Public Schools. In this class I taught the basics of music history, theory, songwriting, as well as how to play various musical instruments. This opportunity led me to a fruitful career as a music instructor. Nate's Music Lessons (Guitar, Production)

    by Taylor Robinson Music

    Miami Beach, FL

Years of Experience: 5 Location Options: In Studio Travel Radius: 25 Genres: Rock, Blues, Jazz, Acoustic Age Groups: Children, Young Adult, Adult Instruments Taught: Guitar Lessons,Record Engineer Produce Overview: My name is Nate! I'm originally from Lockport, NY, a small suburban town near Buffalo. I moved to Miami recently to pursue more opportunity in Music and, eventually, teaching. I've been playing guitar for 12 years now, and play every single day. To me, there is no greater pastime. Presently, I teach full-time with MDCPS, elementary school music! That keeps me busy during the day. But after school hours, I teach my guitar lessons. Formal Education: I attended Brown University for 4 years, where I received a bachelor's of arts in Music. That included music theory, classical and jazz training, and recording technologies. Private Education: I took guitar lessons at the Lockport Music Center for 5 years. My former instructor, Shawn Duscherer, is consistently rated one of the Buffalo area's top musicians and guitar players. We covered a wide range of genres, from classical to jazz, to heavy metal and blues. There wasn't much that we didn't touch upon. Performing Experience: Performance was an integral part of my most formative years as a guitar player. I played in my high school jazz band, and made the All-County band two years in a row. I also was part of a variety of bands outside school, ranging from fusion to heavy metal, which provided me with a greater opportunity to perform around the Buffalo Area. Experience Teaching: I've been with Taylor Robinson music for over sixth months now. But before that, I started teaching guitar in college to friends, younger students, and people in the community. I collected a decent amount of clients and received great experience from that. I currently also teach elementary school music with Miami Dade County Public School systems.
