Senior Care Provider / Alzheimer's Trained
I worked my way through college as a nurses assistant. I did everything from baths, feeding different diets, vital signs, catheter care, colostomies, wound care, stretching, dressing and incontinence care. Also followed potty schedules. I had several private duty individuals I served though out the years.
Most recently, and in fact for the last 10 years, I have been caring for my mother who came to live with me because she did not want to go into a nursing home. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and asked me to take care of her. I was with her through every stage until she passed away after being bedridden the last 2 1/2 years. I studied, learned, and had a wonderful source of input from doctors, nurses, and finally hospice, almost every aspect of Alzheimer's through all stages. I understand that a real person still exist even if they are not able to communicate in normal ways. I understand to the best of my ability, the frustration and fear a person with the disease has. I learned to keep music and memories close! These became my comforts too. I learned also to give the person with Alzheimer's the dignity of choice. So important!!!
