About who needs care: My parents are nearly 90, live at home, and short-term memory is becoming an issue. Mom has been diagnosed with MildCognitive Impairment, and Dad may be starting down that road a bit now).
Mom has Macular/Sight limitation, stage 3 kidney disease, and high cholesterol.
Dad has Congestive Heart Disease, is borderline pre-diabetic, and some balance issues due to neuropathy in his feet.
Both walk on their own, shower, toilet and do all self-care. Dad is considered the primary care giver for Mom, takes care of most everything for both of them, and that's getting to be too much, so we are looking for some help.
On the 'social/home' side - We would like someone to cook 'bulk' meals for them each week according to their dietary restrictions/flavor preferences (maybe some type of protein salad for lunches and 3-4 dinners each week). (still to decide if have them delivered or someone cook here is OK w/Mom - Dad would like to have someone come vs. drop them all off.)
For health/welfare - We would like someone to check to ensure that medications are portioned correctly each week (Dad does a week at a time) and check on their o'all health/wellbeing and answer any questions they have from Dr. visits, tests or procedures requested.
Emotional/Mental Health Current Issue: Mom needs encouragement to get out of bed each day. We need to ensure she is hydrating and doing PT/exercises. This is something that frustrates my father every day... when she is up, she is pleasant, engaged, interested, and does some garden/house chores, but recently is only getting up for meals. While we are here, my brother and I are just starting to implement a visit to her bedroom every 2 hours during the day to ensure she drinks 1/3 bottle of water. We have informed doctors of her new habit, which now includes being dizzy when standing. She is now using a walker when moving from bedroom to bathroom and kitchen.
About the care needs: A Compassionate, Patient, Understanding and Trustworthy person is very important. Someone who loves to cook and is health wise for their dietary needs - my dad likes to ask questions about what's good for them vs. not as he is conscious when buying groceries to check labels on most things.
Dad's interests are wood carving, DIY projects, golf, reading John Grisham type books.
Mom enjoys gardening, sudoku puzzles, word searches and Neil Diamond type music. She used to read a lot of Danielle Steel books, and maybe will again when she has interest.
They both like to watch jeopardy type shows and used to do ballroom dancing a lot!!
I don't like writing this, but feel I need to based on history - a Caucasian individual would be preferred for Moms personal care, otherwise they both enjoy socializing with anyone that shares their interests, or ends up in the shopping line near them :)
Also, Dad's hearing aids are not ideal, so focused conversations, sometimes at a higher level volume are needed. I always say that my dad is the eyes and my mom the ears for their marriage!
