Special Needs Caregiver: Specialized in Down Syndrome

I currently am a part-time nanny for a beautiful little girl with Down Syndrome. She brings joy to my life each and every day that I see her smile as she greets me with a little wave. I have been caring for her at her home along with her 3-year-old brother since she was born (she is now 20 months old). I am going into Occupational Therapy as my career and I learn so much from her. I have learned many various exercises to do with her to help with her trunk support and stability. I also teach her a card program daily to help with her cognitive development and color/animal/object/verb recognition. I also am familiar with "Thera Togs" which is a body suit that I put on her daily to help with her stability, posture and muscles. I also occasionally take her to physical therapy appointments. I also do simple sign language with her. Other than the technical stuff, she is so much fun to be around! We do a variety of fun activities such as finger painting, building towers (she loves to knock them over), reading books, going for walks and swinging at the park. I prepare healthy meals daily for her and make sure she gets plenty of exercise. I am passionate at what I do because I have always had a special place in my heart for children with special needs. They are capable of learning so much and succeeding in life, and I am determined to show the world that! Which is why I am going to be an OTR someday so I can do just that! I also do Senior Home care and have experience with Seniors who are deaf. I took care of a woman for over a year who was 94 years old and was deaf and almost blind. She didn't know sign language but I communicated with her by using simple sign language and writing things down. She was a joy to be around and loved to chat and play cards. I learned to operate her breathing machine to help with her respiratory problems. She also had Polio as a child and I performed warm leg massages to help with the circulation in her leg. I cooked an cleaned for her and made sure she took her pills. I also have experience with taking blood sugar for diabetes and making heart healthy meals for patients. I go to a nursing home once a week with the lady I take care of to visit her husband. He has diabetes and is immobile and I do tasks for him such as clipping his nails, shaving his beard, sponge baths, feeding him and anything else he needs. For more information feel free to contact me. I am an extremely well rounded individual! -Danielle
