Did Speech Therapy work one on one for two years with boys who had no speech or real efforts to communicate. Planned and implemented daily speech work beginning with the vocal sounds the child make on a regular basis. I came up with the idea of utilizing mirrors to help the child form words with their mouth. Starting with the vocal sounds they could make, I used flash cards displaying pictures of objects that began with the vocal sound to reinforce the use of that sound as part of a word. This was very rewarding for the child. Reinforced the vocal theme with music, toys, puzzles and all tools we used until the next sound or letter was introduced. Taught location themes: above, below, behind, in, on, next to with the use of favorite toys. Taught basic numbers and letters math and writing skills. Responsibilities included potty training, teaching to feed themselves, and encouraging trying and eating new foods. Body motor skills: teaching to throw and kick a ball, ride a tricycle, run, and swing, weekly swimming lessons. Fine motor skills were taught with use of coloring, play dough, cutting, pasting, stringing beads and sand and water play. My School!: Philosophy We believe that a high quality children’s program provides a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of young children while responding to the needs of their families. All of our programs will be developmentally appropriate - both age appropriate and appropriate to the individual needs of each child. Human development research indicates that there are universal, predictable sequences of growth and development that occur in children in the first nine years of life. These predictable changes occur in all domains of development – physical, emotional, social and cognitive. A comprehensive knowledge of typical development of children within the age span served by this program will provide a framework from which our teachers prepare the learning environment and plan appropriate experiences. At My School! We believe that planning successful programs goes beyond considering what is appropriate for a particular age group. Since all children are individually unique; understanding each child’s growth pattern, personality, learning style, strengths, interests, experiences and family background is equally important to our teachers in developing a curriculum that is responsive to these individual differences. Learning is the result of interaction between the child’s thoughts and experiences with materials, ideas, and people. We are committed to providing experiences that will match a child’s developing abilities, while also challenging that child’s interest and understanding.
