This review is based on our experience with Smart Start, where our daughter has been cared for for the past three years.

Putting my daughter in daycare was such a difficult decision so I had my mother in law, who has 20 years of experience in the childcare field, join me when I was trying to find the right daycare for my daughter. After meeting Jessie, both my mother- in- law and I knew that this was the best possible place for my daughter. We liked that Jessie had several years of experience, stayed current in training and education in childcare and that she had care protocols in place. Most importantly, we could see that she truly enjoys being with children.
Both my husband and I agree that Jessie has been a blessing! As first time parents, we both benefited from her gentle guidance during the infant stage. At the same time, she involved us in the care that she was providing our daughter by seeking permission before she introduced our daughter to a new activity/ food.
Jessie reassures us that our daughter is doing well by providing us with daily activity reports and emailing us pictures. We take comfort in knowing that she knows the kids well and immediately realizes when one of the kids in her care is not feeling well. The few times that our daughter was ill, she immediately notified us and kept her comfortable (and isolated) until we could come and get her.
I also really appreciate that Jessie keeps my daughter active and engaged, instead of sitting her in front of a TV or putting her in a swing. I often find the kids playing in the backyard, being read to or dancing. Every week I get a report about the activities planned for each day for each of the following categories (circle time, creative arts, pre-math/ manipulative, science/sensory, outdoor motor skills). She has themes for the week (ex. manners, mothers, ocean animals, etc.) She also provide a meal plan consisting of home-made food. All meals are well-balanced.
The daycare setting is spotless and Jessie has all of the necessary items so I only had to bring diapers and milk to daycare when my daughter was an infant.
Perhaps the best proof that she is providing quality care is that my daughter is excited to see her in the
morning and greets me with a smile when I come to pick her up. It breaks my heart that I cannot be with my daughter at all times but I take great comfort in knowing that she is in the care of such a warm, capable and attentive caregiver.

Found this school on a whim after moving to San Leandro from Oakland. My daughter had just turned 2. The first thing I noticed was Jessie, the owner/teacher, said she wanted to meet me after 6 pm because she didn't want to take her attention away from the kids during the day. Most places don't care when you come by to visit. The school was clean, even the baseboards were spotless! There is tons of toys, kids artwork and color everywhere. The space just looks interactive and fun. It also feels new and fresh, not outdated like many in-home daycares. It has a school feel to it, rather than a daycare. It looks like a classroom. The floor is padded and she has a no shoe policy. Love it! Each of the kids have a little assigned cubby, there is a check-in/out sign in sheet, all of her credentials are posted right there for everyone to see. My daughter came home with her first art project the first week. Everyday Jessie send them home with a daily report card and at the beginning of each week you get a menu for the week and curriculum. She has 1 helper, who is super gentle with the kids. She has the under 2 kids (only 2 currently) in a separate little area of their own, only divided by a safety gate. But I do see them come to the "3-4 year" side to play too. Jessie and her assistant speak to the kids in Mandarin if you like, but Jessie speaks very good English. They cook home-made meals everyday, healthy and nutritious. Her backyard is so cool! It has an amazing shade cover to protect the little ones from the sun. It has clean toys and trucks, slide and is just an open, fun space for them. She potty trains, the bathroom even has assigned hand towels per child, with their picture above each towel hook! So cute! She provides wipes and even clean linens for naptime. She washes them weekly. I have an older daughter who went to an amazing daycare in Oakland when we lived there. They closed down before my youngest could go there. When we moved to San Leandro, I had no idea what I would find as far as a small, family daycare. Jessie at Smart Start Childcare is amazing! My daughter is so happy there and I never worry about her being there. Jessie is so professional and awesome with the kids. She reads to them during Circle time and plays with them on the floor. She is affordable too! She has an A.A. in Early Childhood Education and other qualifications. This is her passion, you know it from day one! Thank you Jessie!
