I got into tutoring in my second year of college. I needed assistance passing a geology class. The tutor I got helped me a lot and suggested that I join the student center program, and tutor English. I feel confident in my writing skills, and I decided to give it a shot. I got the job, and ended up tutoring English, and I enjoyed all aspects of tutoring. I liked working one on one with the students. I enjoyed helping them identify their goals in how they wanted to fix their papers. I especially enjoyed enabling to come up with creative ideas their papers could take. I enjoyed seeing them stretch their belief in their own skills in English, and helping them overcome their own self doubts in this notoriously difficult subject. I worked in the center for a year, and then I decided to try middle school tutoring, because I wanted to help those students learn the subject and also about themselves. I worked for two years as an A. V. I. D. tutor, where me and several other tutors enabled students to create efficient study skills, and assisted in homework. I stretched myself in this job because I got to tutor all subjects, history, math, science, and language arts. I obviously enjoyed English more, and still prefer tutoring this course. I enjoyed working with seventh graders and eighth because they still have a childish enthusiasm and they respect adults. I liked the relationships I developed with the students as well. I taught specifically how to brainstorm essays, how to start a rough draft, and to " talk" oneself through their essay by reading it aloud to themselves and asking themselves if their meaning is clear in the paper. Writing can be a tedious process, but I give lots of encouragement and support.
