My experience as a caregiver started with my family, so I am not a big fan of the distant, cold and clinical approach. I know it's possible to do a great job while making someone smile and feel cared for. I'm outgoing and easy to get along with and I love to laugh and have fun.
When my mom got breast cancer, I left my career as an editor to dedicate myself to her. I studied hundreds of pages of medical records in order to fully educate myself so I could advocate for her. I didn't leave her side for the last six months of her life and worked with hospice to make her comfortable.
When my father died, I got my grandmother out of a nursing home where he'd placed her for Alzheimer's. She spent her last two years in our home, surrounded by family, much happier than she'd been in the facility. We organized pictures, went shopping, played games and swam. I made her all of her favorite dishes and she ate like a king - when a person is no longer able to do most of the things that made them happy, there's always good food! I organized all of her doctors and specialists and worked with Hospice of the Valley to create a treatment plan for the final days of her life. She passed away at 94 with me at her side.
I decided to continue care-giving as a career because I can't think of anything more rewarding than making someone happy during this really tough stage of life. I will take care of your loved one as my own. I have references from previous positions who still consider me part of their family.
My last position was caring for a sweet lady with Alzheimer's. We joined a bowling league, created a fairy garden, went swimming, took walks in the park, played games and created art. When she'd get anxious, I reminded her that our only job was to have fun, and we did!
I have experience in every aspect of assisting with personal hygiene, toileting, or changing someone who is bedridden. I'm skilled in the care of bedsores and repositioning. I know how to read nonverbal cues for pain and have experience administering and managing medication. I am 5'9", strong, and adept at wheelchair transfer maneuvers & have experience using a Hoyer lift.
I do have transportation & would be happy to go on outings, shop for groceries or assist with doctor's appointments. I'm available full-time, part-time or occasionally for respite. I can do overnights or extended stays, should you need to go on a trip.
