About who needs care: My Mom has COPD (never smoked)/Lung Disease, Diabetes, Heart Disease, and other health conditions. She previouslyworked as a Nurse Practitioner for 30 years at the local Veterans Affairs Hospital and is a veteran of the USAF as well. Currently, she doesn't do much with her day. She typically does not wake up early, and takes her time getting ready in the morning (unless she has somewhere to go in the morning). She then spends the rest of her day sitting in her chair upstairs in her bedroom watching TV. She typically only goes downstairs to take her medication and to get something to eat, or if someone comes by to visit. She has recently expressed that she is lonely and we would like to find someone that can stop by to visit with her for a few hours (schedule can be flexible) and if needed, can help take her to doctor appointments and/or run errands with her to get her out of the house. I think having someone to come to visit and keep her company will drastically help improve her mental health and overall well-being.
About the care needs: We are looking for someone who is friendly, with a calming personality, has a positive outlook on life (& won't let a sometimes grumpy 80-year-old lady get them down), and interested in this line of work. If you are interested in the Nursing field, that would be a Bonus, but not required. We need someone who has patience, is a good listener, but can also hold intellectual conversations with my Mom. (Fair warning: My Mom has Democratic, Liberal viewpoints and can be opinionated. So, if you are the opposite, you two likely won't get along. We don't expect someone to agree with her all viewpoints, but we also don't want conversations to lead her to get stressed or upset.) We would love to find someone who can get her out of her room and away from the TV (& all the negative news!) for awhile. It would be great if the person could get her outside of the house sometimes too, though it can be hard due to my Mom's seasonal allergies and difficulty breathing due to her COPD & Lung Disease (but she CAN still go out. She just needs a reason and someone to give her a gentle nudge to get out more). We would love for someone who could eat a meal with her so that she doesn't have to eat alone (which would also help get her on a better eating schedule). We want to find someone that will treat our Mom the same way they would treat their own mother and become like a member of our family as well. We know working with the elderly can be difficult work, and it takes a special kind of person to do this type of work, but we are hopeful that we can find someone that will be a perfect match, for both my Mom and you.
