Respite care is a type of caregiving that gives other caregivers a break from their responsibilities. When someone cares for a family member or child with medical issues, they may find themselves providing care for many hours of the day. Essentially a respite care definition is a caregiver who temporarily steps in to replace another caregiver.
The purpose of respite care is to help give caregivers temporary relief so they can run errands, attend their own medical appointments, and so they can have some time for themselves to relax and unwind.
A handful of different factors can impact the cost of respite care, including where you live, the experience level of the caregiver you hire, and how many hours of care you need. With those caveats in mind, the average hourly rate for respite care on Care.com is $21.03.
You can hire respite care services to tackle any of your normal caregiving services. For example, if you need to cook for a family member, help them get dressed, and give them their medicine, you can hire a respite care provider to help with those tasks.
At Care.com we request that all respite care providers complete an annual background that we refer to as CareCheck. If a respite care provider completes a Care Check, they will have a badge on their profile that indicated the date they completed the background check. While this is a good place to start when safely hiring respite care, we do recommend you run your own background check and request references of anyone you’re considering hiring.
