Aspiring Art Therapist Who Adores Children!
I have always had a passion for caring for children and aiding in their well-being. I am a 25-year-old recent college graduate who has been caring for children since her early teenage years. I have a brother who is 13 years younger than me, that I helped my mother raise. I acted as part-time guardian for my brother while my mother worked multiple jobs. I cared for him from infancy through elementary school age before I headed off to college. During infancy I provided care such as bathing, preparing bottles and feeding, swaddling, and changing diapers. I also engaged in activities that promoted learning and read to him. During naps, I would wash and fold laundry, and keep the house tidy. Once he began school, I helped complete homework assignments and projects. I also organized activities which helped in his struggles with math and engaged in arts and crafts with him.
During my time of part-time guardian to my brother, I also babysat for family friend Nicole Martin. I provided care for her infant daughter and preschool aged son. I provided the same love and care as I did with my little brother, while also performing light housekeeping duties. In my last year of college, I interned with Dr. Ellie Brown at ECCEL (Early Childhood Cognition and Emotions Lab). During this time I worked with children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, helping to ensure that they had the resources they needed to flourish. I worked within the Kaleidoscope Preschool acting as additional aid and supervision to teachers. While interning I also provided emotional and academic support to children and facilitated co-play and various learning activities. I enjoyed my time at the preschool so much that I did not end my internship after graduation. I continued to intern at the preschool until their school term ended in June.
I especially enjoyed my time Kaleidoscope because of the emphasis that they place on arts enrichment. The preschool prepared children for school using an arts-integrated early learning approach. The children participated in music, dance, and art classes every single day. As an aspiring Art Therapist whose desire is to work with children, I thoroughly believe that the arts is critical to the development of a child. I believe the arts create a safe space where children can express emotion, learn, and grow. I also believe that children need a nurturer, advocate, and a patient individual in their lives. I believe that I possess these traits and much more, and I am confident in my abilities to provide love and care to children.
