Her first official gig was singing the national anthem at a baseball game when she was in 2nd grade! After that moment she knew she wanted to make a career out of it. Maliyah learned her first instrument, the flute, when she was in middle school. In the years following she self taught herself to play the alto sax, the bari sax, the tenor sax, cello, piano, and ukelele. For high school she attended a performing arts school where she was given the opportunity to perform all around her state with her choir, band, and as a solo representative of the school. In college Maliyah received scholarships for her musical ability and minored in both music theory and performance. Maliyah has been teaching professionally for five years now and has worked with students ages 3-73! Her primary instruments to teach are saxophone, piano, and voice. Aside from vocal technique, Maliyah believes in an emphasis in training the performer themselves. A singer without the ability to perform is missing a big piece of training.
