After caring for my grandmother who had Alzheimer s and my grandfather who was suffering from lung cancer, I realized how important it is both for the individual as well as the family to have compassionate care. When a friend asked me to care for his mother who had a stroke, I took the opportunity andI changed my career.
Since that time I have had the opportunity to care for so many wonderful people. Men and women, some just lonely and in need of a companion, some with Alzheimer s, dementia, MS, and various mobility issues. On the rare occasion, I have been there to reassure them by recounting stories they have told, and assuring them of what a wonderful job they did with their family, or building their business, taking care of their pet, etc., whatever they needed to hear to feel peace as they took their last breath.
It s Important for them to know that older does not equal insignificant. Unfortunately, many of our elders feel like they don t matter. I see yours DOES to you. :)
