Since 2006 I had cared for my father as his primary care giver. Since 2011 I have cared for him full time. He was a amazing strong man who taught me compassion for others and life. Never give up no mater the circumstances. He was first diagnosed with brain cancer and recovered well with minimal assistance. Then he began to loose a lot of function in 2011 he was diagnosed with Parkinson's. I enjoyed the time I got to spend with him and care for him. We did a lot of shopping he loved to go once a week. We went for long walks and he had many dogs waiting for him, they knew he would have a treat. We took vacations. He was from West Virginia and when he could no long drive, I did all the driving , he always said he taught me well:). He loved classic country and dancing, and being in a wheel chair wouldn't stop him from enjoying a dance with me or any of my friends. We painted and watched old shows he loved. He was amazed at how YouTube can show anything he wanted. I would always find a way to have him enjoy things he used to even if it wasn't quite the same. In my experience of caring for my father I have learned many things, bathing, proper transfers, medication and catheter (super pubic) care. I lost him this April 2015. I feel that caring for someone and giving them a better quality of life or making them enjoy things everyday might bring them, is such a rewarding feeling.
I am married with 2 children , 18 and a 12-year-old who was best friends with his grandpa. I'm always turning around looking for him and there is he helping a older gentle man or woman.
