For the past 18 months, I've delighted in privately tutoring students (ages 11-16) reading, writing, and research skills, as well as preparing them for the SSAT. Prior to that, for 25+ years I thoroughly enjoyed teaching teens and adults ESL at the college & university level. I've taught students from 80 countries, have taught overseas for 10+ years, and lived outside the U. S. for 18 years. My specialty with non-native speakers is Accent Reduction, which I taught & researched extensively at the UW (for my PhD), working with international professors, gov't ministers, and other professionals. Starting fee for school-aged children is $35/hr for the first 4 lessons and $45/hr thereafter. (Materials are provided except for SSAT books.) My Accent Reduction program is 1. 5 hours, 2x week, at $65/hr for the first 2 lessons, and then $75/hr thereafter. All accent materials are provided. Joint re-evaluation (decision to continue) after 10 lessons. Currently I'm teaching on video call.

I've had a lot of tutors myself, and it's been central to succeeding in the most challenging courses I've taken, where cognitive 'brute-force' could no longer get me to the finish-line. I've always loved collaborating with those around me, in school and beyond. I found working together and helping explain concepts we were working through helped my brain process and learn the objectives more completely. In my opinion, the only thing better than learning something new is sharing it with someone else. Throughout high school I informally tutored a lot of my classmates in physics, chemistry, and other STEM fields. I believe part of the reason my peers came to me for answers is that, more than any exceptional knowledge of the material, I'm very good at putting things in more intuitive terms, and learning something that's already intuitive is considerably easier. I've applied this to teaching technical skills as well, as the co-captain of my robotics team and a team-lead in an engineering club.
