The Bowery Official Historic District Tour

    5.0 (17)

    Powered by Viator

    New York, NY

Join us on a journey through over four centuries as we walk down NYC’s oldest street! Originally a Native American footpath and Dutch farm road, site of the first free Black homesteads, it witnessed gang wars, the bloody Astor Place Riot, & Lincoln’s famous anti-slavery speech at Cooper Union. It was the working-class main street for sailors, shopgirls, gangs, gays, and waves of immigrant Irish, Italians, Germans, Jews, and Chinese. NYC’s first entertainment district, it has seminal links to tap dance, vaudeville, Yiddish theater, Houdini, Stephen Foster, Irving Berlin, Mae West, modern tattooing, Abstract Expressionism, Beat literature, improvisational jazz and punk rock. Though it declined in the 1900s, when flop houses and dive bars proliferated, it nonetheless became home to affordable jewelry, lighting, and restaurant supply stores, and a live-work home for artists like Marc Rothko, Maya Lin, William Burroughs, Robert Frank, and Debbie Harry.

Gritty NYC True Crime Tour with a Lawyer

    4.6 (13)

    Powered by Viator

    New York, NY

NO Mafia stories...no ghost stories...no olde, moldy "Gangs of New York" stories. We will visit the actual locations of 4 bizarre murders - all of which occurred during the gritty heyday of sleazy old New York City - the 1960s - 1990s. If you're a fan of fascinating true crime books + podcasts + docu-series - then you've found the right tour - this is for you. One of the murders has a strange occult/satanic backstory - which I'm able to relate in detail as I lived for a decade in the building where this murder occurred. For each of the murders we'll discuss, I've gone well beyond standard research and dug up surprising details buried in the actual case files, forgotten magazine articles, out-of-print books, and other resources. Please join me as we revisit a pre-gentrification New York - a city where anything could happen - and often did. ***** Please note: 1. This tour may not be appropriate for young children. Parental guidance is suggested. 2. We will take one short NYC bus ride.

    4.7 (12)

    Powered by Viator

    New York, NY

Travel back to the 1970s, to an East Village when apartments were cheap, Rock was great, and you had to show up in person to buy tickets! We’ll visit the sites of the legendary Fillmore East, the long gone CBGB’s, and The Bottom Line, places that launched the careers of some of the biggest names in music. We’ll also walk to some lesser known, but equally significant, sites where artists honed their craft and first gained a following, places like Club 82, On the Rocks, and Great Gildersleeves. Were you at The Bottom Line in 1975 when Bruce Springsteen first blew the socks off the music world with Born to Run? Or did you see Patti Smith at CBGB’s in 1976 after the release of Horses? What a SHOW! We’ll also revisit some of the legendary shows of The Who and Pink Floyd at the Fillmore East, as well as the New York Dolls at the Mercer Arts Center. Along the way we’ll dip our toe into the world of Disco at the site of Infinity, a dance club destroyed by fire 1979. Tour runs w/confirmation.
