Focusing on design and composition, their art will shine with this illuminating caricature of celestial bodies. Known for her sculptures and influential art gallery, Savage is responsible for educating and encouraging a generation of nationally renowned artists born out of the Harlem Renaissance. We will experiment with the tactile approach of clay by making an antelope bust. Students will expand their sculpting techniques while learning about armature support construction, troubleshooting with different approaches to balance and application. To top it all off, they will add their own lively touch by painting their masterpiece, focusing on value and form.

In this six-week mixed-media series, young artists will explore the magic of Batik-inspired fabric art using a kid-friendly glue-resist technique. This is one of those processes that feels a little like science, a little like magic — and always results in wow moments. Each week, students will build skills step-by-step as they design, resist, dye, and reveal their own fabric creations. We’ll talk about pattern, color layering, and global art traditions while encouraging kids to follow their own ideas and artistic voice. The slow, intentional nature of Batik is such a beautiful contrast to our busy days — it teaches patience, problem-solving, and trust in the creative process. Throughout the session, artists will work on a variety of functional and display-worthy pieces, such as tea towels, tote bags, and small wall hangings, with optional holiday-inspired designs woven in (think snowflakes, stars, hearts, leaves, and festive patterns). Every piece will be completely unique — just like the artist who made it. Students will practice their blending techniques as they depict the colors of the rainbow. Then, after they've learned all about ROYGBIV, they’ll experiment with mixing all those colors together to get an array of skin tones. While exploring color, we see that though there is a whole spectrum of different outcomes, they all contain parts of the same rainbow.

This week we are mimicking her whimsical style to draw an adorable mouse. Students will get to practice line and form to set up a successful composition with a distinct background and foreground. They will also learn valuable cross hatching techniques to express value and light.
