Key Concepts and Learning Objectives: Conceptualizing Multiplication: We will begin by defining multiplication as repeated addition and as a way to find the total number of items in a set of equal groups. Visual Models for Multiplication: Participants will learn and create various visual models to represent multiplication facts up to 5×5, including: Arrays: Arranging objects in rows and columns to demonstrate the commutative property (a×b=b×a). Area Model: Using grid paper or tiles to visualize multiplication as finding the area of a rectangle. Equal Groups: Drawing or manipulating objects to form a specified number of equal groups. Multiple Strategies for Solving: We will explore a variety of strategies to solve multiplication problems beyond counting one-by-one, such as: Skip Counting: Counting by a given number to find the product. Decomposition: Breaking down a problem into smaller, more manageable parts (e.g., 3×4=3×(2+2)=(3×2)+(3×2)). Properties of Operations: The workshop will introduce the foundational properties of operations and their connection to multiplication: Commutative Property: The order of the factors does not change the product (3×5=5×3). Distributive Property: How multiplication distributes over addition (e.g., 4×5=4×(2+3)=(4×2)+(4×3)).
