Also, I have an associate's degree in education. My daycare provides bilingual education: English and Mandarin. Currently, my program accepts children under 5 years old. Currently, I already accepted two infants, only one toddler slot is open.

I want the kids in my program to have endless opportunities to play and learn. Through play, they can explore and expand their mind. Learning through play is very important to me. There is a lot of healthy brain development when children are expressing themselves creatively and using their imagination. We also focus on every domain of development for the children in every activity we do, from social, emotional, physical, and cognitive. We have a loving and safe environment that encourages development. We make sure that creative, language and communication skills, fine and gross motor skills, problem-solving, and social/emotional skills are all being developed on a daily basis. We focus on every step of the growing process. We do this through sensory play, arts and crafts, puppets and dramatic play, and more. They learn about science, math, and we read stories. Everything that allows for their self-expression, learning and development. When the children come into my home every morning, they feel loved and know they are safe and going to have a fun day. Sometimes parents come in and tell me their child wanted to come in on the weekend! The children truly want to be in my home, and it is so encouraging and rewarding to me to see that. My favorite activities to do with the children have to do with helping them create and express themselves. For holidays, we get to make themed art projects. For Valentine's day this year, we made hearts and showed their parents how big their love was for them. We did this through putting sparkles on to the hearts, and the kids wanted to use all of the sparkles! It was very cute and fun! What is NeighborSchools? Children learn best by doing, and each day, we give them new opportunities to explore, learn, and grow. We partner with Funshine Express to apply a curriculum that meets the social, physical, emotional, and cognitive needs of children at every age, and we help children to thrive with compassion and understanding. We recently added a new partnership with our local library, and twice a month, our local librarian comes to Dottie's Family Child Care to lead story time! What is NeighborSchools? The vision for this daycare was born out of the difficult experience of my own childhood. Being asked to sit still in a classroom for several hours a day was the opposite of my instinct to play in nature. I could hardly wait for recess to go explore rocks and trees and find peace and a feeling of being at home in the natural rhythms of the New England seasons. I didn't want my daughter to have the same experience. So I sought to create an environment that was inspired by Montessori principles and Nature School principles. The goal is for children to be self-guided in their discovery of themselves as a part of the natural world. The curriculum and design of the space creates little separation between nature and the learning experience of the children. This allows them to freely engage in the mystery of nature and cultivates the wonder that all children naturally possess. This means there is absolutely no technology or screens and much of the day is spent exploring the outdoors. The area is filled with mature oak trees, large rocks, hills, moss, and different types of plants. There is also an abundance of wildlife, from many species of birds to squirrels and chipmunks and even a family of groundhogs that lives on the premises (my daughter squeals with delight when she sees them). The indoor area is adorned with trees, woodland animals and is inspired by Native American culture which is part of my ancestry. In fact, the Massachusett tribe lived in this area at Pine Banks Park. Part of the curriculum is for children to go there and experience the sacred connection to nature that has been lost in modern society. In summary, Oak Haven Daycare is designed to enable children to learn by freely exploring the wonders and mysteries of the natural world. What is NeighborSchools? I want to keep educating myself and incorporating the latest technology, lessons, and all of the new things that are coming out all the time about the development of children. I love helping the larger community within my home. I look forward to expanding my space over time and being able to teach many children over the years. We open at 7:30am and we begin the day with free play with a variety of toys. Then we clean up and wash hands and go potty before breakfast at 9am. We have a curriculum we follow to learn letters, numbers, colors, and shapes, before we go outside weather-permitting. We love to go out and be with mother nature whenever we can! After that, we come back in and wash up for snack time and prepare for circle time. We love circle time and reading stories. After that and some more free play, the children help with setting the table for lunch at noon, and help clean too. From 1 to 3pm we have nap time. For those children who don't rest, we have quiet play or we sit and chat quietly with each other. In the later afternoon we go outside once again weather-permitting and maybe go for a walk. Then we have puzzles, games, and singing until the kids have to clean up and get ready to go home for the night. It is a fun, packed day of learning and exploring for the children! There are many important aspects of Family Child Care to me. one is an engaging and development-oriented curriculum. This is enhanced by my learning of how to be a better educator. I am also incredibly attentive to healthy eating. I want to make sure the children are nurtured and that everyone is happy and smiling. I love that my program is family oriented. The children get the care and the love in a smaller group that they wouldn't necessarily be able to receive in a larger setting, yet the daycare center structure and philosophies are all still there. We have been providing a safe and nurturing environment for children since 2008. Parents' minds are at ease when they go to work or school, knowing that their child is cared for in all aspects of their developmental needs. We are a curriculum-based program. Because of my background in public and private schools, I've been able to work with teachers to learn what they need children to be prepared for when they enter school. Using this information, we mimic how a preschool classroom is. We have a structured schedule, with circle time, teaching them how to sit and share, and more, similar to a school setting but with age-appropriate learning. We have recess, art, music, and every day we do something educational, from math, reading, science, and more. We also do ongoing assessments and share this information with parents so we can work together in supporting their child's needs where they need assistance, while helping them master what they already know. We focus on supporting children's 5 important developmental domains such as Cognitive, Social/Emotional, Gross Motor, Fine Motor, and Language/Communication. We also value encouraging participation whenever possible, so even if we have a newborn - if the child is awake then we have them sit with us during activities like circle time. While they can't be verbal, they can still absorb the atmosphere and be hearing, seeing, and learning. We believe less is more, so we have a larger adult to children ratio than other child care programs. This maintains a calm and controlled environment when we don't exceed the number of children per adult ratio, and allows for individualized attention, which is essential. We love having kids of all ages, races, and genders because while we can focus on them as individuals, they also have the opportunity to grow up in a diverse setting. What is NeighborSchools? I want to see growth and development in the kids. That is the key aspect of my program for me. I believe that communication, consistency, and structure are key elements to growth and development. I also value the communication and relationship with parents, because that's where everything starts. I know that if the children see a good bond between the parents and me, it is easier for the children to bond with me too. I even encourage parents, when they can, to stay with the kids in my home for an hour or so the first couple of days in the program so that the children ease into it better. I strive for both parents and children to feel comfortable to ensure the highest level of care, growth, and development. I am always there for the parents, whether they need my help as an emergency on a weekend or want to drop by the program anytime during the day. They might catch us doing some of our favorite activities, like circle time where they all can participate, floor activities, or playing music. I treat each child as my own but adhere to what parents say is best. I am very attentive to allergies and am happy to give the children preferred snacks provided by the parents. My child care philosophy is inspired by the kids I've cared for throughout my life and what's worked for them. For example, my son is super active, always running around and playing. So I've created a variety of activities throughout the day for all kids and interests-from physical games when we have a lot of energy, to reading and arts and crafts when the children want to relax or have quiet time. Above all, I am always open to feedback from parents. I love working with parents to create the experience that works best for their children and families. What is NeighborSchools?
