The name Barnette is in honor of the generations of families who have lived in the Gilead, Huntersville area. Bertram Alexander Barnette, Sr. was born in 1918 and was a life-long resident of Huntersville. Barnette owned much of the land on Bud Henderson, Gilead, and Mt. Holly-Huntersville Roads. He enjoyed buying and trading land with other farmers. His land ownership included a parcel of land that was granted from the King of England before the Revolutionary War. Barnette's lineage can be traced back to the locally historical Alexander and Davidson families.
