Twenty years ago, I was fortunate enough to be able to leave the work force and stay home with my two amazing daughters; a decision made jointly with my husband that was the best option for us. Every family is different, and contemporary couples have many, many factors to consider when making decisions about work and how it fits in with their plans with regard to raising children.
Once my girls were in school, I returned to work, part-time, and enjoyed a wonderful balance of work, home life, and volunteerism. I was able to teach an after school enrichment class (ethnic cooking), as well as serving as the "art mom" in both my daughters' classrooms.
When a close friend was expecting her second child and planning to continue working, she asked if I would be interested in leaving my job and caring for her toddler and infant-to-be. I jumped at the chance, knowing how mutually beneficial this arrangement would be. My friend had always admired my patience and unflappable humor in parenting, so I felt very appreciated. For her part, the stress and anxiety of finding a loving sitter who would treat her kids as their own was eliminated. I was at the hospital to meet the new baby (my charge!) and the mom returned to work a week later, beginning a sweet and tranquil 18-month period, where I spent many happy hours, and some difficult ones too, with the two children.
It worked out wonderfully for all involved, and although they live in another state, we remain close friends and the children are happy and successful.
In the intervening years, I have worked outside the home, and always yearned for the simpler, more real, experience of spending time with children. It is the most rewarding work of all to me, and with my girls in high school and college, I am ready to leave office work and once again care for a child/children. Can this work really be sustaining? I believe so, and would welcome the chance to form a long-term relationship with the right family. I am certified in infant, child and adult CPR. In addition to my love for children, I am also a passionate cook, and would welcome the chance to help out with meals, whether special occasion or everyday.
