Part Time Care Giver.

Part-Time, 1 Year of Experience. I am a 45-year-old wife and mother of 2 grown children and three grandchildren. I was in retail management for 27 years. I left three years ago to go back to school to pursue my dream of being a photojournalist. I attend the Art Institute of Pittsburgh on line which gives me a lot of flexibility with my schedule. I have only cared for one family. I took care of an elderly couple. She was disabled with rheumatoid arthritis and unable to move without assistance. He had bladder cancer. I stayed with them 24 hours a day three days per week. I did this by my self for months until the last few weeks when he was in final stages hospice would come and bath him and change the linens. A nurse came once a week to check vitals, progress and pain management. I was responsible for all of their care which included preparing meals, feeding, bathing, organizing weekly dosage of medicines and giving it to them. I kept a notebook with everything I gave them and at what times so I could communicate with hospice if something more needed to be done. They were like family to me and I would do things for them that are not called for by a care giver but I wanted them to have more of a quality of life in their final days. I made special treats for them. cooked some of her recipes, did manicures and pedicures. Massaged their backs, read to them and anything I thought would make their day better. In his final stages of cancer he was bed ridden and had to be taken care of completely in the bed. He was fed washed and changed in the bed. I took care of them until the very end. They were such special people and so in love they were married 58 years. He held on way longer than he should have because he was afraid to leave her. She died of heart failure. I was with him that day and was told to tell him. I told him he could let go now that she was waiting on him. I held his hand and stayed by his side for three hours until he took his last breath. I have never seen such love a devotion. I felt honored to care for them until it was time to go. It was bitter sweet. I had cared for them for months and didn't want them to go but I was glad to see them out of pain and be together once again. Their family would give me outstanding recommendations if needed. I wasn't sure this was something I could do but I really enjoyed caring for them and miss them every day. There children still keep in touch with me.
